Scientists Believe They've Found Cure For Aids

Recommended Posts

Hold your horses folks - this might be one of the ultimate scientific breakthroughs in recent times. All the so called "cures" for AIDS so far have been nothing but retroviral agents (cocktails of several expensive drugs) - that only served to inhibit the AIDS virus. None were able to purge them from your body for good. They could only limit the activity of the virus allowing you to lead a normal (almost) life till the end.

But with this new report in the Salt Lake Tribune, it seems Paul D. Savage of Brigham Young University has invented a compound that actually HUNTS DOWN the AIDS virus in your body and kills them. This compound acts on all known variants/strains of HIV.

Here's an exerpt from the article:

Researchers, including a BYU scientist, believe they have found a new compound that could finally kill the HIV/AIDS virus, not just slow it down as current treatments do.  And, unlike the expensive, drug cocktails 25 years of research have produced for those with the deadly virus, the compound invented by Paul D. Savage of Brigham Young University appears to hunt down and kill HIV.
Although so far limited to early test tube studies, CSA-54, one of a family of compounds called Ceragenins (or CSAs), mimics the disease-fighting characteristics of anti-microbial and anti-viral agents produced naturally by a healthy human immune system.
Under a study sponsored by Ceragenix Pharmaceuticals, Savage and his colleagues developed and synthesized the compound for Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine. In his Nashville, Tenn., laboratories, Derya Unutmaz, an associate professor of Microbiology and Immunology, tested several CSAs for their ability to kill HIV.
While issuing a cautious caveat about his early results, Unutmaz acknowledged Monday that CSAs could be the breakthrough HIV/AIDS researchers have sought for so long.
"We received these agents [from BYU] in early October and our initial results began to culminate by November 2005. We have since reproduced all our results many times," he said. "We have some preliminary but very exciting results [but] we would like to formally show this before making any claims that would cause unwanted hype."

This might very well be the dawn of a new day for those infected with this ghastly and fatal Syndrome. I pray to God that this cure turns out to be TRUE to its fullest.

I pray to God that this cure turns out to be TRUE to its fullest.

Amen to that.

I've heard several times and also read in the newspaper over the years about 'cures' to AIDS, but nothing ever materialised. I hope this time it's the real deal.

we would like to formally show this before making any claims that would cause unwanted hype

Too late ... the media's hyped it already. I guess it really is too early to decide anything yet. We'll just have to wait and see.

Once they find a possible cure, I think they would have to do alot more before telling the public about it. There'd probably be a large time lapse between the actual discovery and the announcement of it. And then what if it gets people's hopes up, but turns out to cause problems, or is unreliable. Still, if there is a cure, more people are likely to be careless when having sex, thus, spreading the virus quicker. I had a friend whose father had HIV, and I spent alot of time at his house. After I got to know them well, I understood what they have to go through knowing their father isn't going to live his full life, however he is able to control it with expensive medicines, it's no cure. I pray that everything turns out okay for their family, and I pray that people get checked just for the hell of it, so they don't ruin someone elses life and family just because it wasn't cool to wear a rubber, or get checked.I know for a fact before I get into a serious relationship, both me and my partner get checked before having unprotected sex. We're in the millenium now and **** isn't the way god intended it, and I believe a cure will be found, and soon, but I pray that it's soon enough to help the many innocents that currently have AIDS because of some stupid mistake. Nobody should have to go through that, but they made the mistake of being careless, or trusting... I can't even talk about this anymore without worrying about people I know.

I was reading about this yesterday I think, I tried my best not to let myself get sucked into it but I can't help be being hopeful. Something like this would be amazing in and of itself, plus it would give hope to those researchers working on the other horrible diseases still prevalent in today's culture. I hope with all my heart this becomes a reality and hope they can get it into circulation A.S.A.P. once they determine if it works.Maybe I'm weird but reading about things like that just fill me with hope. If they can beat Aids (assuming they do it for real)... who knows what will be next.

hah i heard about this, they have been working on this a lone time now and maybe it is true this time. It maybe hard to believe but if thier is one thing i learn in this life time its that humans are capible of anything. Even though humans have found a cure to a somewhat deady diesease (infection) im still more intrested in travel, i wish they would find technology to travel deeper into the earth or farther into space. But anyways this is great news and hopefully cure to many other things like cancer.

This is great news, each year I hear something like this that a cure was found, but never heard further about it. Aids is one of my worst diseases I know and I am quite afraid to get infected in no matter what kind of way. I just hope that they will really find the cure, but still the drugs might be very expensive, as they are now, it is very hard to get them in poor countries, for example like in Africa countries, where we have a lot of people infected with Aids.I don't have any friends who are infected with this virus, but I think it would be terrible for me to know such a person, I don't know what you could think when you know that you won't live your full life, some people even are afraid to speak with people infected by this virus, but you can talk with him/her, drink from the same cup and etc. I think most of use know how the disease spreads. One problem is Junkies, I think they need to get needles for free and not use the same, but when your degradation level is high, I don't think a lot of whom cares. The needles which are infected in the streets should be cleaned, because even little children can pick them up and get infected somehow.. :)

This is great news! I was born in '81, so the "AIDS scare" is something that I don't remember very well. Since then, we've obviously come very far in the fight against this virus. There's still a long way to go, but I hope this is a very large move in the right direction. I've only met one person with HIV/AIDS. I met him briefly, when he was in very early stages of HIV, so I can't really say that I've seen how devastating this virus can be. But I know that he, and people like him, deserve to be healthy. Even if this isn't *THE* cure, the scientists working with this treatment will surely learn more through their research and testing. Not that I really want to wait for an actual cure. I'd love to see this stuff in pharmacies and at doctors' offices even before I post this reply. I know that won't happen though.

Yea, it'll need to get past whatever boards even if it is known to be a cure, but apparently if it is deemed ready experts predict that they'll rush it through the FDA approval cycles to get it out as fast as they can do without skipping the tests required to ensure its safety. Still take years but that's how it works I guess :S

It is a really good thing if they have really found a cure for AIDS. It has been the big killer in most of the populations. But, what really comes to concern is that if the cure is really true, how would one go about distributing the medicines?I mean, it is not a big deal for the developed countries, but in the under-developed coutries, where AIDS is really causing a havoc, one has to think of a proper economy-model of deploying the medicine.

Agreed, this is a real problem. Even if the cure has been tested and ceritifed to be safe, negative side effects that are unknown yet even after the tests may start showing up 10 years after the HIV patient is treated. This problem with most "cures" are that the compound for destroying the virus stays within the body. If it comes out naturally (You know what i mean), then it won't be much of a threat.
Then again, we have to consider the cost value of the compound. Unlike anti-biotics like penicillin which are bacteria (I know penicillin can't get rid of HIV B) )so they reproduce in large amounts, compounds have to be made using all kinds of scientific techniques and the ingredients within the compound might be something rare. Undeveloped countries will not be able to afford these types of treatment and even these days, Southern African governments (with countries that has the highest HIV/AID rates) don't bother with spending money on treating these people and the affected suffer. Some uneducated people may not know that they are host to an STD and may pass it along to another.

I sure hope this new cure is really not another hoax to get people excited. Although i believe other scientists have also invested alot of their time and effort to study the virus and announcing a possible cure might be motivation to continue furthur their research

it's too good to be true. but if it is i hope that all of the victims get the chance to be cured. i hope that some of those victims would go out and encourage everyone to be safe and not be careless having sex with a bunch of people.

Even without a "cure" the scientific and medical comminties have turned HIV/AIDS into more of a Chronic illness than the death sentence it once was, at least for those living in the West with ablity to afford the drugs. However, the best defense against AIDS in reducing the numbers of new infections has been education and awareness. I'm enough of a libertarian that those that were infected through blood transfustions or other means beyond their control...this is great news. Those that contracted the desease through poor personal choices, especially after all the attention and awareness about HIV/AIDS and other STD's. I'm far from being a bible thumbing person and even from the perspective that the Bible might not be the "literal word of God", there are reasons why the Old testament has rules about avoiding pork and rules on moral bahavours that come from public health awareness. Funny how they kinda figured this out a couple thousand years ago and yet today we like to dismiss those people as "not as enlightened" or "not as smart" as we are. They might not have had hybrid cars, but those people weren't idiots.
