After having a fit with Windows being stupid (when browsing the web, scrolling became choppy... formatted many times, even swiched hard disk, no fix) and SuSE doing the same thing Windows was doing, I found my copy of Xandros and put it on a secondary machine (Pentium III @ 900 MHz, 512 MB RAM) which works wonderfuly!I am quite satisfied how Xandros isn't being stupid like Windows and how easy it makes Linux to use. It has that Window and Linux look & feel to it and works amazingly well!Launching it on my network was no problem. I got connected via my DSL line in in no problem, I got my main network drive "mounted" after a little while to figure it out but it works perfectly, connecting a printer is going to take some time since the one machine on my network has a very strict firewall on it, Xandros can't connect to access the printer (however, Windows machines can all access it), but other than that, I'm quite satisfied! My friends aren't big fans of Linux (of course, they've never used it like I have) and I think they're all weird because they don't understand Linux.Of course, I seem to prefer Linux without the threat of viruses (even though so many people use it) and love it since like 95% of software for it is free and open source! :D In the past when I have jumped into something like SuSE (I've used SuSE Standard Server 8 and SuSE Enterprise Server 9) and I have to say, it's like jumping in a freezing cold lake. Using Xandros, however, is like jumping into a swimming pool where it's cold at first, then gets warm.Between my Windows workstation and my Xandros workstation, I'll probably jump on my Xandros one first from now on! Now all I need is an LCD monitor and some speakers and I'll have my laptop off to the side! :D It's a wonderful experience! I love it![N]F

Hey Nightfox, nice to see you taking the plunge :D. It sure is a good thing you didn't give Linux up just because you didn't like SuSE. A lot of people give up linux (in favor of windows of course) just because they had a bad experience with one distro. With so many distros available, you can always find a distro that is best suited for your tastes. I've seen XandrOS in action on a friend's system. It's pretty cool. Quick to install, good to look at and easy to use. Only drawback is it isn't free ;).But I'm kinda surprised that SuSE was giving you trouble. I've never used SuSE, but from the way some people rave about it kinda made me feel that it was one of the good ones. But still, it depends on your taste. After all, there are so many people who still prefer RedHat and Fedora to anything else :D.

Congratulations on what I think is a wise choice, nightfox!

And yes, Abhiram, many people rave about the ease-of-use SuSe provides, but nightfox mentioned that he was using server editions, which -- believe you me -- are quite the b**ch to work with.

I havn't tried Xandros myself but have heard good things about it. If you are ever looking for another desktop linux that is really easy to get into, Ubuntu is a great one. Really any debian based one haha, but Ubuntu is the most user friendly I'd say. Apt-get is a super awesome tool for obtaining software so you don't need to worry about dependencies and whatnot. It also has great hardware detection. But yea, glad to hear you are enjoying xandros and the linux way. You should force some of your friends to try linux for a week and see how many keep it around :D

Oh ok. That's news to me. I didn't know SuSE had a server edition as well. Maybe I should try it out when I have time.

In my opnion ..you should stay away from Xandros , and Linspire. SuSe is good too..but its a commercial distribution.Give Ubuntu a try...they even ship free cds. Also take the linux distribution chooser test...it was mentioned in the board a few days ago.

If you feel you may want a bit more over time, I would definetely recommend Debian. As far as package management goes, it is by far the best i've ever worked with (although, I've had yet to try gentoo, I've heard the portage system is quite good) I like debian myself because I like the package management system, and I just like to start with a base system and piece it all together from there.

I'm glad that you found something that you really love. Me, I'll stick with XP. I know that a lot of people absolutely hate Windows, mainly because it tends to have glitches, glaring errors, and other, even nastier stuff ... but I haven't had any problems that a couple of minutes spent tweaking can't fix.Maybe I'm just lucky. *grins*Now, if you want nightmares ... let's talk about Win 98 *snickers*
