Miners Trapped In West Virginia

Recommended Posts

Has anyone seen that story on the news about the 13 miners trapped underground in Thomasville, WV? It's literally like, 45 minutes from my house in Belington. My parents got stuck in the traffic near there on the way home yesterday from picking up my boyfriend at work, which is about 15 minutes from the mine.It may not seem like a big deal to most people, but this is a place where going to the grocery store is the highlight of the week, so it's pretty crazy to me.But it's not the first time something on the news hit close to home. About 5 or 6 years ago my then boyfriend Mike was working for a heating and air conditioning company and when he was doing a job in Tinsleytown, MD he accidentally bumped into a suitcase in the attic of the house he was working in and when it fell open there were the 50(?) year old remains of a baby inside. He called me at school from the police station and told me to turn the tv on, but wouldn't tell me why... he was too shocked to explain. That was some crazy stuff...

Wow sounds like your town stays quiet for a while just to build up to big events. I hope the miners will be alright and im sure they have alot of family and most of the town worried about them. Unfortunately im on the other side of the world so i will not be able to keep up on the events happening Thomasville but im sure you can keep us posted here.

One of the miners was found dead a few hours ago, they haven't identified him yet. It just came on the tv right now that they've found the other 12 and they're alive, but they're still trapped. So far it's been about 41 hours...

I've got bad news for you, I'm sorry to tell you, but that part on TV was a misunderstanding between people. Because, well, err. twelve of them are death and one survived, not like you said twelve survived and one died. I'm very sorry for you, did you know anybody of them?

All the best for you and everybody else.

You know, I was just about to post that but I had to restart my computer and I was too busy watching the news to notice that I didn't sign back on the net.

Altough I did not personally know anyone involved (that I know of), my father and fiance do work like 10 minutes away from the mine.

What pisses me off is that they knew 20 minutes after they found the miners at around 11:30pm that there was only one survivor, but they let the families and everyone else think that there were 12 survivors for 3 HOURS before they made the press conference at 3 something. Can you believe that??!!

I heard a different story. What I know is this: when they found the miners at around 11:30 someone of the rescuers called the goverment are anyone, don't know exactly and told them that there was one survivor and twelve deaths. But someone around thought he heard him say twelve survivors and one death. He was happy because of that and called the press and they told everybody else the news. That's the story I heard, I don't know if it's correct, but I think it's a more likely story.

I'll admit that around that time I was working on my site and only heard bits and pieces, but I've seen at least 2 or 3 interviews from friends and family members since the press conference who are saying that the CEO of the mine company actually came to the church they were staying in and personally told them that there were 12 survivors. Now I'm hearing that the call came over a speakerphone, and that's the reason for the "miscommunication." All I know for a fact is if it were my father or fiance down there and I was led to believe they were alive for 3 hours when in fact they were dead, I'd be kicking some asses.

This is just to show you how close my dad works to the mine: Map
I just moved here in August, so I'm not entirely familiar with the area (I only get to "come down off the mountain" 2-3 times a month) but the circle around Sago shows the vicinity of the mine, and the circle around Buckhannon is where my dad works. That train track that runs over that road where it says South Buckhannon is right behind the sawmill where he works, he drives a semi over it everyday.

The situation is a sad one, and unfortunately it has been tainted yet again by a few mishaps that i am sure nobody intended to happen, ive heard stories of people making jokes n situations of death and the "boy who cried wolf" syndrome but im sure no CEO or rescue staff set out to create a pranks or keep the hope alive. What i can say though is the press are to blame ...yup, typical rush for the story break the latest headlines no matter what the cost and no regard for the emotions of the families involved. Thank you sunblind and warbird for keeping us updated as we only received a 30 second segment on the "mining tragedy mishap" on our 8 pm news.My thought go out to those who are grieving and in mourning.I hope nobody loses their job over this mistake and if anything maybe a lesson needs to be learnt.

I'm 90% sure the problem occurred somewhere between the rescuers discovering the barracade that the miners made and command center receiving the communication. I don't believe it was the press this time, they were all kept at a 500 ft minimum and could not have heard the message inside the command center personally. They believe it was someone inside the command center who had friends and/or family inside the church waiting for news. Someone from inside the church actually came up to Anderson Cooper to tell him that the 12 of them were dead, the press didn't even know what was going on. There's also the people who say that the CEO of the mne company personally informaed them of their safety.I don't know, but thanks everyone for their interest in my "hometown" (born in Cleveland, OH raised in Baltimore, MD) and you're quite welcome for the updates... since I live in WV it's on almost every single channel here.

Well i followed the story on and off since it happen and when i heard the news that they found them I was like awesome but when I found out hte twisted truth I was like who the hell did that one. Of course the question is who did it, and oyu know on one is going to fess up to that answer though. But whos to blame though now, you know the governor is going to get hit, mine company if lucky might still keeps it's business which I that will ahppen when you 13 different sets of lawsuits goign ot be fired at them once the people are named.
