Recommended Posts

CPU : AMD Athlon64 3400+ 2.4Ghz clock, 400Mhz FSB
RAM : 2 * Kingston 512mb dual sided ValueRam PC3200 DDR400
Motherboard : ASUS K8
Graphics : Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 LE 128meg
Disk: 80Gb

Tripple boot system,
WindowsXP on partiton1
FreeBSD 6 on partiton2
Gentoo Linux on partiton3
/boot on partition4
/home on partiton5
swap on partiton6

I only use WindowsXP for Soul Reaver Defiance, and Half-Life games.

today, it refuses to boot.

after the loading screen, a blue screen is presented with the mesage

autochk not found skipping AUTOCHECK

then a second or two later, the BSOD (Blue Screen of death)

Fatal error at <hexidecimal memory address> <hexidecimal memory address>,<hexidecimal memory address>

what went wrong ?

ive changed, and installed nothing.

just play a few hours of games a week.

and how do i fix this ???

and PLEASE dont tell me to re-install windows. lol.

the filesystem is VFAT, so i have full access to it under gentoo linux.

thanks.

(trying soo hard not to start ranting about MS, lol)

EDIT:
i fscked the windows partiton, and found boot sector irregularities.

localhost ~ # fsck /dev/hda1fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)
dosfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN

is this a known bug ???

does windows update its boot sector without also updating the on filesystem backup ???

if not, then what could have changed my windows boot sector ???

considering restoring the boot sector.

ive found the autochk.exe program.
it does exist... maybe it is corrupt ???

chris@localhost /mnt/windows/windows/system32 $ md5sum `find /mnt/windows/ | grep autochk.exe`ae06f7bb251869edbc9f50a36949a2e3  /mnt/windows/windows/system32/dllcache/autochk.exeae06f7bb251869edbc9f50a36949a2e3  /mnt/windows/windows/system32/autochk.exe

if anyone else here has the facilities, could you please md5sum your autockh.exe files, so i can compare for corruption.

thanks.

WINE's support for DirectX is very inferior to Cedega's support for directX (currently supports directX 9b)however, my subscription to Cedega ran out, and a recent Steam update requires a cedega update, without my subscription, i nolonger have access to the FTP servers.now if we can get back to the problem, rather than asking why i want my problem sorted, LOL...i returned the boot sctor to its origonal state, made no change. Thanks for the download wutske, ive not tried it yet, but thanks anyways. If you guys knew me aswell as the guys at developerfusion, you would know its a miracle ive not filled this thread with rants, hehe.again, thanks.

didnt help...so the question is this>what could cause the error message "autochk not found" when the file autochk.exe DOES exist, and it is in th corrcet place.. ???any why of why would it cause a BSOD ?where does windows set the PATH env variable ? could that have become corrupt ?my system is virusfree, auto updates turned off.no new software or devices installed.USELESSSSSS !!!!windowsXP install disk insits on neuking my MBR.. so not only do i have to re-install windows, i have to make a linux 64bit boot disk to fix the MBR afterwards.agh !

i think you are right xbox....Its just sooo frustrating not being ably to boot a rescue disk, chroot, and re-compile whatever became corrupted in windows.Everything about the indows install bugs me.Last time i installed windows, the timer said that it would be complete in 2 hours.2 hours later, i came back to the computer, to find that it had paused installation 15 minutes into it, to ask me what time it was, LOL.ALL install questions should be asked in one go, so that it doesnt need to be babysat.lol, ohh well, anuther afternoon wasted.

Have a look at the disussion here - maybe it can shed some light on your problem. Although, by the looks of things, you must already have started afresh:
