Blu-ray released in November

Remmeber the topic "Meet the new generation of DVD" ? thats right , a Taiwanese firm AOpen has plans to introduce its first line of internal and external PC-based Blu-ray optical drives to the Middle East by the end of November.Compared to present dual-layer DVD writers, which can write up to 8.4GB of data to compatible media, Blu-ray drives should be able to write up to 50GB of data.However, like all things new in the world of PCs, the prices of such drives are expected to be high when the models are first introduced onto the market.enjoy

50 gb's. That's insane. Almost 1/2 my hard drive on 1 dvd. I'm still living in the cdr generation. Maybe I'll step up to a dvdrw soon. I really need it to back up all my files. Thanks for the info. (isn't ps3 going to be using this technology?)

Oh wow i didnt think of it that way thats so cool, heh just the thought of more detail in maps and better backgrounds with larger maps is making me drool....battlefield 2 will become a thing of the past real quick. If the playstation 3 is going to be using this technology sign me up because thats going to be mind blowing ....hope that make a metal gear

Well, it was just the matter of time. Blue-ray's really have thinner light spot so that way it can make smaller holes in medium. That's the philosophy. It was just the problem of medium that needs to be solved. Now, probably they solved the medium, and in approx. 2 years from now we will have them in our PC boxes, at home, istead of DVD.

Although Blue-Ray is good, there is HD-DVD in the market.
HD-DVD is its main competitor.

Bill Gate said Blue-Ray disc's protection scheme under is Very anti-Consumer, which would make them harder to on the personal
computers.
I think this may be the reason why Microsoft decided to support HD DVD format instead of Blu-ray format recently.

Bill Gate also said that "the studios got too much protection at the expense consumers and it wonât work well on PCs".

Yeah, I've read about the battle between the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats.

 

Personally, I'm going with HD-DVD. Even though Blu-Ray will hold more, it would cost a heck of a lot, due to new production facilities. HD-DVDs could be produced alongside DVDs, with just some manufacturing equipment upgrades needed.

Thats true m8, but if this is true software development will be a little more dificult because they have to build a software who also can read the protection. Any way what they would do it will be breakable as allways was, so i'm not consern with it.

You think that's insane? There is another company making holographic terabyte discs. The write and read speeds are insane. I figure it's because it reads multiple layers at the same time.

I think PC magazine said they might be going to go up to something like 1.6 terabytes.

 

Can't wait for Blueray though. I'll be glad to get rid of all the junk on my hard drive. I could burn it to normal DVDs but I have so much video and it will take so long... It would be really convenient to stick everything on one disc. You could start burning and just walk away. It might be a pain to label 50 gigabytes of data on the front of one disc though...

They asked Blue-ray to include the mandatory managed copy, which allowing users to copy high-definition movies onto PCs from discs and distribute them on home networks.HP also asked Blue-ray to support iHD, which will be implemented in Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system.I think if Blue-ray fail to do that, HP may give it up and support HD-DVD instead. HD-DVD have have more change to be the standard of Next-Gen DVD with wintel's support.

Yup, it's amazing how the Blu-rays will be able to hold up to about 50 gigs and also be the new compatibility game for a play station 3. I'm amazed it can jump from 8 gigs dual layered dvdr, to a huge 50 gig in just about 5 years. I wonder how xbox's hd-dvd will be able to keep up. Also, blu rays will get faster so players can play it better.

The headline of the article said "Sony wins major DVD studio ally."

But actually, Warner Bros said it will release DVDs in the Blu-ray as well as HD DVD formats.

 

The movie studios love Blu-ray DVD format because it is more securer.

Although Paramount are supporting both formats, blu ray has 6 of the major studios, and I think there will be no way that Sony will develop for HD DVD, so no Spiderman for HD DVD...............The fact that HP is urging the Blu Ray to adopt similar HD DVD technologies seems to me that that they think Blu Ray will win and they want the disc to make as many parties as happy as possible (specifically Microsoft and Intel)
