How can I help when you don't let me see you page. If you want a good design, you can use a pre-built CMS and templates for that. This is better than build a site from scratch.

For a good CMS, I recommed XOOPS.org .

Pureheart, I don't think that Destiny needs a Content Management System because he/she has very little content.

Destiny, what you need to do is figure out why you want a website; what you intend to do with it. The Internet is just a medium. After you know what you want your site to do, then it will become easier for you to realize what it should look like.

There are many html tutorials out thereâI cut my teeth on the Intro to HTML and Teaching Tool found on this page all those years ago. And I do suggest you learn HTML before you attempt Javascript or PHP or any other scripting languages. You've got to learn to walk before you can run, after all.

Good luck.

Well .. I always draw my sites out on a notebook, first. Sounds dorky, I know, but it works. :) Sketch out tables, text and banner areas, menus, links, etc and the other basic structural things. Don't worry about how graphical they look, yet. Then I set my page up in black, white, and maybe another color or two to designate certain areas. I'll use boxes of color to represent images and such. Then get graphical. I pretty much completely suck at graphics, so I just play around in GIMP for a few days until something that I like comes out. Then apply it to the site. Change all your text colors and links and whatnot and see how the site looks. It'll probably be pretty close to what you imagined. If you need specific help, post here! The way your site sounds maybe an IFRAME would work? Do a main table with a link bar on the left and an IFRAME in the right. I love IFRAMES. ;) Once again, give us a link! ;)

 I haven't seen your site, but I would suggest starting out on WYSIWYG editors and studying the script. Try manipulating the HTML itself. After a while you will learn what does what. I would reccomend going to a site such as This One. I know at first glance it is kind of girly and childish but the site will REALLY help you get started then it even goes into subjects that intermediates in the design realm are learning. Once you have a grasp of HTML, I would look into Javascript. Go to sites such as Javascript source for free scripts that will really enhance your site. One thing is to always use your imagination, design possibilities are limitless. AND HAVE FUN!!!
God Bless

A link to your site would really sit well, so we can have a look around. First steps like a whole lot of other suggestions on this page would be to hit HTML on the run, hand held with an HTML editor (If you're using office then MS Frontpage/ or some opensource editor). HTML is relatively simple and it about a week of practice, you'd get the hang of it. I first started off with a completely HTML website on Geocities, which I managed to upgrade to JavaScript and XML supproted site.

Xisto became a great next step moving on to using a database and PHP (which is a lot more complex and so far it's been taking a while finding my feet).

Yes, on the PHP with MySQL platform, you'll find a bunch of ready to go, right out of the box opensource freeware like PHPNuke, Mambo and XOOPS... which would help you get a website off the ground in mere minutes, as soon as you figure out how to configure it all (easy as reading the Readme files provided and utilizing the numerous forums available).

give us a link to your site

but meanwhile, go to http://lissaexplains.com/css.shtml and make a style sheet, and you can make your own custom navigation bar...most websites put the navigation on the left side of the page and then all the text in the middle. put a lot of graphics on there and it shouldn't be too boring, even if it's white on black =] and for your site description, i'd recommend making another page for that. cause if they don't know what your site's about, they can look at your handy navigation thing and then be like, hey "About Site" -- let's click that and they can be like "oh cool" lol

I personally read every single HTML tutorial I could get my hands on and drew out my conceptual design before publishing anything, but that may be just me :)

For someone who would like a nice "placeholder" layout, or just doesn't feel like learning to make or making their own design, I highly suggest going over to OSWD. Not only will you find a badass design for your site, they're all great learning tools. I like to download various layouts and tweak them to add a little "Touch of Rae" and then resubmit them so that others may learn as well.

I've been doing HTML for 8 years and I still went there today and got me 6 new designs to play with

Good Luck!

Well, for the first time a created my site, actually, it was awfull too, but with time a got it, so i think you`ll got it too very soon, it`s not as hard as lots of people think :D And if you`re not very good at designing, remember, you can always download templates. My favourite site with free templates is http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/, there`re plenty of not bad lay outs :D

Well, if he doesn't want to use CMS, don't force him... I personally enjoy writing sites from scratch, and in such way was my homepage (that I want to host with Xisto :D ) done - and it didn't turn out that bad, see for yourself...

However, if someone doesn't know how to use HTML or XHTML pretty good, then maybe CMS isn't all that bad. XOOPS' nice, so is jPortal - but it's in Polish :/ and I personally don't like PHPNuke at all.

Will you finally give us address of your site?

Nah. That's not dorky at all. I had a friend when I was a teenager who would actually sit with a notebook while she was in high-school classes and code pages on the paper. Then, when she got home, she already had a really good idea of everything that she needed to do in her HTML editor (Notepad, usually) to create what she'd laid out when she was supposed to be paying attention to her teachers.

It's people like that who make me ill, mostly with envy. *grins*

But you don't have to go to that extent with any Web site to figure out what you want to do. One thing that I do is to have a template set up in Notepad with the basic coding for the layout that I want all the pages within my site to keep (i.e. fonts, backgrounds, etc.) and then just save it as an .htm or .html file. Then, I save the changes frequently and preview it locally - just to be sure that my lousy coding actually looks right.
