Damn Small Linux

ahhh, 100 Posts Was inactive for 2 days waiting to post sumthing interesting for my 100th post

Well I am shure most of the hardcore Linux fans out here have heard about the " Damn Small Linux " software. And for those who havent well here's a little review. Since i just started my encounter with Linux I really dont consider what i would say here as the review but something from a newbie point of view.

Damn Small Linux is hell small as the name says lol, Its hardly 50MB and fits perfectly on any Flash drive of today or best off, you could install it on your present OS ( windows ).

If you go into the Normal install from the scratch on a HDD, You can use this as a Debian Distro. and hey, If you install it on a host like windows you get things like mp3 player, firefox ( ), USB support and a little wireless support.

I havent tested it out much because i am going in for a full install of a different distro, but i guess this would solve the problem i had a few days back , dont you think ? If a newbie like me wants to start off then i guess , he should start off on DSl ( damn small Linux ).

Anyways, if you guys try this out, leme know your reviews too. I'd love to hear what you core fans have to say to this.

I always wanted to learn Linux but never had time to. Installed Mandrake Linux twice before and since then have formatted my laptop...again. I didn't install it back again since I only fiddle with it once in a while.I will definitely give this one a try since it doesn't take up much space and it runs in Windows, which is always a big plus for me

Shoot...having problems already. Is the whole download 50MB? I see a bunch of files listed in the download mirror sites that the DSL site gives you. Do I need to FTP to get ALL those files or just grab one of the 9MB gz files?

The download is nearly 50MB, Exactly 49MB. If you check the FTP/ HTTP download links, most of them have a folder called "ARCHIVE" , look into it for the version that suits you and get the ISO, Those are bootable. Hope this helps.

Is there anyone here who can explain why they added a install-to-hdd option to damnsmall... It would save some extra (mega)bytes that can be used to fill with other things. I don't see why anyone would want to install a stripped down version of knoppix on his harddrive. It's an older kernel and it's incomplete for the more advanced stuff one does with his comp.anyway, I just want to warn you guys not to use this as a learning-os, since there are a few differences in it compared to a fully equiped Linux distro. I myself usually use damnsmall if I'm at a foreign computer and I don't trust the environment. DSL is like a pocketknife, it can do alot, but it lacks the power/handling of the real thing.

Thankx for the tip jipman, I was just looking through a few searches about linux and came accross this software, and since i am new and just lerning linux, i didnt know the technical problems involved, I just thought that since it installs on windows, It could help few other newbies ;)But anyways, is there any other version that works on windows ? I have mandriva installed so its no use to me, but just for the info sake.Cheers

Did you also know of the emulation program bochs? It can emulate an entire computer. So in theory at least.. you could install all kinds of operating systems on your windows box.

The install the hard drive option is great !It turned the spare out dated parts under my bed into a fully functional computer !With NO USB or CD-ROM, booting a live distro was out of the question,and the hard disk was only 512 megs.so installing DAMN small linux, along with the pluggin programs like Firefox, Open Office, ssh daemon, and monkey httpd.. i got new life to an otherwise useless machine.8 months later, the graphics card (or possably the AGP bus) died... but it was still cool while it lasted.

I've used DamnsSmall Linux several times, and I also think it's really great. They should call it Damn FAST Linux, it runs really fast! For those who are inetrested in small Linux distributions, I would like to recommend PUPPYLINUX, a small distro which is bootable from CD, USB-Stick or harddisk. Check it out! Another very cool small one is BEATRIX

8 months later, the graphics card (or possably the AGP bus) died... but it was still cool while it lasted.

are u sure it was AGP ..cause AGP wasnt there for such old hardware
