20th Century Fox Backs Blu-ray Discs... High definition video

Twentieth Century Fox issued a statement to the effect, that it will release content on the new, high definition Blu-Ray Disc format, through its subsidiary, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Fox intends to release some of its best TV programming, films and other titles, from its exhaustive library, following the launch of Blu-Ray hardware in North America, Europe and Japan.

Blu-ray seems to be giving DVD a run for their money. With PS3 also backing blu-ray discs, looks like they've got a head. But technically, a blu-ray disc does have more storage than a DVD. A dual layer DVD can store a maximum of 30GB but a dual layer blu-ray can store upto 50GB .

I've been hearing some rave about Blu-ray discs for a while and then it quieted down again I see it's coming back again LOL. The last time I read about this, it was competing with another format that was trying to push itself on the market - forgot what it's called :DThis is going to be great. I don't even need to get too many hard drives for my backups anymore LOL. Just popup a few of these puppies in and I should be set :PThere are 30GB dual layered DVDs? I never heard about them. The most I heard were those 9.4GB (or was it 9.2GB) dual layer DVDs. But with this new one with blu-ray, it's going to be huge. Prices might be staggering, but I'll be sticking to my DVDs for the time being.

My bad.... it's not 30GB DVDs... it's 45GB!!! Take a look here.

These aren't the standard DVDs that we are using nowadays. These are HD-DVDs i.e. High-Definition DVDs. The storage itself shows how much technology has improved. IMO, this will lead to a real war for standardisation. Right now, each type has it's own advantages and disadvantages.... See this. It's a bit old, but shows the ups and downs of each format and shows which companies are favoring which format.

Well, for sure they'll be costly when they come out. What was the cost of a CD 10 years ago ? It starts slowly, but pretty soon, I'm sure all of us will have blu-ray writers on our systems .

hmm i think it'll be quite a while, the technology has to maintain a price to recoup the cost of development. the war between formats will help to drive prices down, but ultimately the inclusion of bluray on the million plus ps3s that have been shipped already means the format war has probably already been won by sony. catchier name too!

Ummm... dual layer DVDs cannot have 30GB of storage. I think you're referring to a dual-layer HD-DVD. Note that HD DVDs are different than DVD even though its structure format is the same.
