Xp Slowdown After Format

I just reformatted my hard drive last night, and i reinstalled xp. I went to start using it, and it was extremely slow. I tried moving some windows around the screen, and it was very choppy. Now mind you, that just a week before, both of my partitions on a 80 gig hard drive, and it ran better that this. I can't think that dual booting mandriva linux and windows would cause this kind of a slow down. Does anybody have any ideas?

perhaps missing or corrupt graphics driver?

make sure both AGP-GART and your Graphics card are installed.use the AGP-GART from the graphics card from the motherboard or graphics card install cd, the generic agp gart driver that comes with windowsXP is very slow.

Can you give some more specs on your computer, speed, RAM, etc.This does seem quite strange indeed, I have never had a computer slow down after a format but a few things do come to mind. From your first post I assume you also installed Linux along with your XP format. How did you partiton you HDD? Is the Linux partion first and the XP partiton last? If the XP was moved to the last partiton perhaps the latency of the HDD changed (as you may know, as the data moved to the outer edges of the disk the access times increase). Also how much space did you give the XP partition? A standard install can take about 3 GB and of course you need at least another 1 GB for the page file.Another thing to explore is did you install SP2? Did you update all your drivers? This is a strange one indeed. The only time I have had a slow down after a format was due to page file issues.

Do your primary and secondary IDE Controllers run in Ultra-DMA-Mode 2? (see Device Manager - IDE Controllers). Sometimes it happens that one of your IDE-Controllers suddenly runs in PIO-mode.

Good point... I'm thinking another possibility for this that you you may not have loaded the Motherboard chipset driver. Sometime this will contribute to hard drive problems.

Yes, but the IDE controller is using what WinXP installed, it doesn't mean that it will work properly. So, the best thing to do is load the drivers that came with the motherboard.

hi, kevlar557, if you windows xp is running slow, how about get into safe mode, if this is same as that you stated before. then, it should be the graphics driver is not installed correctly. more than that, what percent usage of you cpu is, is this 100% or not?- hope this help

From my knowledge, everytime u reformat your windows, some space in the c: drive will be taken up by some old undeleted windows file. U might have 2 or 3 drives (C:, D:,....). Maybe your other drive have some virus. I suggest you do a cleanup on all your drives and then try reinstalling your Windows again.

I think it's an outdated graphics driver. I've had that problem with many computers, right after i first installed the OS and the graphic driver that XP selected happened to be the wrong one, or simply a generic driver. install the latest driver you can find for your card, and it should speed up.

drivers man, drivers! check for that graphic card drivers, and check in BIOS if it's everything ok, check that L2 cache is on, and such stuff...
