FTP Or File Manager - Which Is Better? Which is better?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys talking about this topic here, what do you guys think is better? Using file manager or Ftp? I mean, everytime i use ftp it is so slow! File manager is quite fast but you can't do much with it if you want to upload lots of files at once. Yet many people seem to use ftp more than file manager. I even edit my sites using the HTML editor in the file manager of cpanel. What is what? Which is better to use? Which is more efficient? :D

It all depends. If you have the capability of creating a website and testing it on your own computer, I'd make most of the site on the computer and then upload everything via ftp. If, however, one item needs modification, and the first version is already uploaded, I'd use file manager. For a quick drag-and-drop ftp setup, you can add an ftp to My Network Places on any Windows XP machine. I think that has alreaddy been covered somewhere on this forum. I will do a seacrh and get back to you with the instructions. I use the windows ftp and have relatively no problems with it.~Viz

I agree with vizskywalker it all depends on what you want to do, upload a lot of files at once or upload files fast. Unfortunately you cannot have both right now at least...

I prefer FTP for my files. I find it faster than File Manager and easier to navigate. It’s especially helpful when you need to upload multiple files. But there is really no reason why you can’t use both.

File manager allows you to select each individual file to transfer just like ftp and it is less hassle. Whether you use a HTML based one or a software one like FileZilla.

Umm... Filezilla is an FTP program. It ha a GUI which is similar to the Explorer interface, but it uploads via FTP. The Filemanager in cPanel does not use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload, it uses POST data sent via http requests. So your statement make no sense.

See if web2ftp.com has what you need.I'm not sure if I know what you're asking, but that's the website I recommend to everyone. It's web-based, meaning no possible insecure programs or anything. Not that those other services ARE insecure, just that I think uploads like Web2ftp are safer in principle.

I prefer to use FTP for my uploading to server, it is much more convenient for me, always done it with FTP manager, currently I think the best is Filezilla which does everything I need. Web file managers for me is slow and not so convenient, even though sometimes http uploading is much faster, but I usually have problems when uploading through CPanel File Manager.

One problem That i keep havving with Ftp is that it constantly disconnects whenever i stop transfering files. In a matter of 30 secs after my last file it just disconnects and its gettting really annoying having to type everything in again every two minutes. Is there anyway to keep the connection ALIVE. Does anyone know of an ftp that always keeps the connection?

Which FTP program are you using???
I use WS FTP LE 6.0 & have never encountered that kinda of problem.

Well, the disconnection from an ftp server can also be the server setting, even if the ftp client has keep alive feature, I had issues being disconnected from different ftps using Filezilla, somehow they recognise with those ftp commands/functions, but it's usually on big FTP Servers, which isn't as popular now as they used to be, now p2p is more popular and faster.

I think FTP server can do more than With File Manager. anda FILE ZILLA is BEST FTP server.

you wrong at that point.. File Zilla is an FTP client and not a server.

It depends on the use if you need to use FTP or HTTP upload. If you are going to upload just a single small file then using an FTP client will take much much longer.. hmmm, about 5sec - 2 mins time difference since the FTP client will travel the directory first where it needs to put that single file..

using HTTP, you wasted much much more time navigating to the target folder anyway.. maybe a few minutes.. for a busy programmer doing loads of projects at a time.. this is such a big waste of time.. the benifit of small increase in download speed was beatin by the time needed to travel to the target folder and HTTP upload cannot have a resume function that an FTP server offers..

I never use HTTP upload and when I cannot have a handy FTP client.. I just telnet..

Plus.. you can send your files via FTP and forget about it.. and continue your other work.. something that HTTP upload cannot offer due to tedius task needed to send files..

Right now, I use the File Manager. I have Filezilla on my computer but, it took me forever to figure it out. Do you have to be connected to the FTP (Filezilla) before you can try to upload files? Or, if your not will it be there when you do connect? Maybe thats my problem, I'm not always connected I think. I never really knew the whole purpose before of an FTP program, but once I get the hang of it I think I would use it. I've only used it when I was getting a background from a website though. I don't know how to use it any other way. The website had an option for FTP file transfer.
