Try removing the extension from the file

eg

file.rar -> file

That solves it

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

ooh..man..

That means I have to tell everyone to remove the extension name

or remame the file before send to me.

Why does Gmail not just accept rar file? (ZIP is accepted)

I think it's mainly because of security as I heard once that most antivirus are unable to scan within .RAR archives but they can within .zip files.

hm... this is new to me. maybe ashtray is right that antiviruses are unable to scan the RAR files. or maybe that all rar files are mainly used in the hacking community. so there trying to restrict the movement in illegal files.well i think ZIP files are rubbish compared to the RAR files. RAR files has more feature and security on the files inside them. if it get corrupted it would tell you.

i think this is all because of security......but gmail should enable these RAR files as rar are used very much for compression files, try attaching the rar file in HTML mode of gmail .... may be it will help as it shud......cheers up and use winzip.......:P

No!!! USE WINRAR!!!!! :P I think i know what's your problem... i read somewhere (i can't find it now!!!) taht you can't send .exe file, even if they are compressed... Meaning: Do u have a .exe file inthat .rar file????If so.. then try sending that file from another account...This is something to prevent mailicous code from arraiving to your inbox, threatening your security, ans even the gmail servers (i supouse)

you could also do something like this:Change file.rar >> file.rar.txtor something along those lines. I'm sure after clicking it a few times, even a rather unintelligent user would consider deleting the .txt or whatever extension. Better yet you could do this:file.rar >> file(delete_txt_extension).rar.txtThat way you have some instruction as to why you are placing two extensions. Again, I believe that most people would figure it out after a while if he/she really wants the file opened ^_^

Yes...I do have a .exe file inside that .rar file.

I think it is the reason...

But although I did rename the .exe to .ex_ or remove the extension file name,

it still cannot be received by my gmaill mail box.

I just did a test about this. >_<

WinRAR rocks! It is better because I am in some sort of hacking and I need it to get the files I want because they don't put them in ZIP file formet.

give the .exe a hole new extension, like .jpg or .gif

Yesterday i did some research on your topic, and i found the same answer i gave u... i tried reading gmail policies and legal stuff... but i don't seem to find the "oficial" text that explains the .exe issue....

You shouldn't suffer so much to send i file.. try https://www.hightail.com/ or give yahoo a chance, they have a 250 mb free mail account... And i think they allow .exe files

The .exe being inside a rar, and google find in it, is explain in their policies...

Is Google reading my email? No. Google scans the text of Gmail messages in order to filter spam and detect viruses, just as all major webmail services do. Google also uses this scanning technology to deliver targeted text ads and other related information. This is completely automated and involves no humans.

Ok, jeje, i went to the gmail wbsite to get the part i wanted to quote and i found THIS!!!!

Just Launched!
G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.

We're not in the plains anymore

And they also have a new conectivuty thingamaggiga with picasa, their photo software so u can send you r pics!!! jeje, i'm very excited with this..

Yesterady i was sending my self a .rar with 70mb of pics to my gmail account.. i go delete those file now..

So, anyway... try the "completetly new extension" and tell us what happend

You could try the free and open source format called 7-Zip.

http://sourceforge.net/, it's in their top 10 downloads list. :P

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I would like to add http://www.tugzip.com/ to that list. It's faster than winRar, less of a strain on the system and best of all it's free :P
