Transferring Large Files Online Any suggestions/tips?

I have a folder of 50 mb worth of pics that I need to transfer to my friend for a photo project. Now, I was trying to zip it but no matter what zip program I used, it barely decreased the size. Are pictures just not zippable? Also, are there any free image-hosting sites that allow larger file sizes? I normally use imageshack.us, but that limits file sizes (like most free hosting sites). I even looked into free websites, but most of them limit files sizes to be uploaded. The only other option we're trying now is transfer via AIM, but that's hard because it's hard to be online at the same time. So it'd be great to have some kind of online "depository" ...or at least be able to zip these things!!

Use a thing called TUGZip or 7Zip and that will compress them, ask your mates to do the same and it will all be perfect. Also moved, wrong area.

Hmm. Usually I find that photos stay pretty much the same size when you zip them, probably because formats like jpeg and gif are already made to compress information, so not much MORE normal compression can be gotten out of them. Using a more powerful zipping utility where you can specify amount of compression usually helps, but you have to uncompress it the same way of course.

 

Have you tried Yousendit yet? Basically you upload your file, up to 1 GB, I think, onto yousendit's servers, and then yousendit will provide a link that they email to your friend, and then he has 7 days to download the file from yousendit's servers, after which yousendit will delete the file. It's good for one-time transfers.

 

If you're looking for a place upload your photos for display or storage, I usually use Photobucket. Yes, Photobucket does have limits on each picture (250kb and below) and the bandwidth as well as total amount of pace you can use, but because the stuff that I store online is already downsized and compressed for online viewing, each file is only around 60kb and thus I get to store a lot of photos there. It's not good for protection if you upload too-good quality pictures anyway.

I also recomed u get an image optimizer to make your photos smaller and easier to send...

Another option:

Get a gmail account, (your friend has to get one too) and send 5 messages each containing 10 mb of photos.... or.... get the Gdrive (seek this foprums for info on this) and upload your images and sahre your pass with your friend...

if you are talking bitmaps, then they will compress, jpeg's and png's are alreay compressed.

as for transfereing them, use ftp.get an ftp server from sourceforge, setup a username and password that is allowed to download the photo's (zip them anyway for convinence of only downloading one file)

then you friend can download them by pointing a web browser (or download manager) at http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ then entering the password when prompted.

(make sure you open port 21 in your firewall)

YouSendIt only works with single files, so be sure to at least convert the folder into a .ZIP, no matter how little it is compressed. You are just looking to make it one file, so that YSI will recognize it and upload it.

 

Folders don't work on YSI. Just take two extra minutes to zip it.

I often use sendspace.com for files upto 300MB in size. We had a large 280MB powerpoint file that we had to share between offices and this was ideal to email the link back and forth.

50 MB pictures isn't that much. If a friend lives close, how about using a USB flash drive?If not, there are several options:1. Use Xisto. Transfer files using FTP to your Xisto server and then your friend can download them from the public_html folder.2. A lot of sites allow transfers of up to 250 or 500 MB. Are you sure you haven't missed the best ones?3. Transfer using IM. You can use AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger or GTalk. I have never tried 50 MB before, but it worked for 26-27MB.Those are plenty of options. Just use the best one.

You can also use Megaupload, they allow files up to 500MB and they have a very good bandwidth.The only problem is that when you want to download it you have to wait for a minute and then the download starts.

It is very easy to send a

50 MB file from one end to other end. There are many ways to do the same. First you compress that folder. Make this folder as less as 25 MB. Then easily you can transfer this zip or rar file through yahoo mail. But if you are having any problem to do so then you can Upload this zip file to your website or on any other friends website then tell your friend to download this file. Uploading any file of 25 MB will take maximum 10-15 minutes through any FTP upload software. If you don't like this option then you use Free email provider to send this zip file

As is written in one of the posts replied in response to the topic, if you want to transfer the files just once to a friend then the best thing you can do is to use yousendit.com. You will upload your folder and they will provide you a link. You give the link to the friend to which you want to send the folder and he will download the folder from the link. It is all as simple as this.
If you want your image files to be available for view online then you should use the image hosting websites. Another thing i would suggest you is to use free hosting service like blogger or wordpress. You can create a blog with just your pictures on it and they will remain on the internet for as long as you like.
If you want your image files to be saved on the internet as zip file then you should upload it to forums which support file hosting.

Zip into a single file then send it via email or put in a free host site for your friend to download, tons of options I believe.
