Preview Of Next Generation Linux Desktop ! blew me away check it out

Linux / Unix / Solaris / BSD have always been very secure, always been very fast, and very powerfull.
however, if you want to take over the world, what you really need is a cute pretty desktop.

Well previews have just recovered from the slash dot effect (published on slashdot a few hours ago)
and ive downloaded and watched the previews, and let me say WOW !

basically, whats happening, is currently, X is just a display porgram, with openGL acceleration.
all gui affects are done by the window manager (KDE / GNOME / whatever)
well now they are integrating some amasing effects into Xorg.

things like Windows which wobble like jelly in 3d when dragged around,
menu's which pop us and settle down (semi transparent wobbling !)

Dusts buttons that use openGL to display cool smoke effect when pressed.

Anti Aliasing (yes i know OSX has used desktop AAfor quite a wile now)

Some of the things remind me of what Tiger has in store. Tiger is the next big update to the Mac OS X, and it has really cool visual effects like the example you brought up. Can't wait for Tiger to come out... It's supposed to be out some time in May or June this year?Of course, I'd have to pay for Tiger, unlike Linux which is free.Looking at all the posts around here makes me want to grab my brother's good for nothing PC and install Linux on it. It'll be cool to learn another Operating System. Maybe when I have more time on my hands...

To be quiet honest, I'd prefer the good old days when you just have command prompt. I don't know why, but Graphical interfaces are just slow to work with. In IRC in which i took my first steps where you all have to type commands, this is much faster than let's say msn messenger, because you don't have to find their names, click on it and then start typing. In IRC you just type immediatly to the person you want.....I'm just an old nostalgic person.....Good old days

ooooh, ahhh, I'm definately looking forward to this if it's implemented for KDE too. Now, I don't need Mac OS X for its looks and Windows Longhorn for its looks too. All I need now is Linux.lolxboxrulz

I prefer command prompts too, but interestingly enough I enjoy coding GUIs.This wobbly window effect is incredible. I'd like to see what MS is doing to improve their GUI....

Ahhh this looks well nice! I might download it and bang it on my Mandrake 10.1 I just (finally) got working! Im using KDE at the moment (havent configured anything else) but Gnome 2.0 looks quality! Nice post..

Eh, it's nice to see a new desktop for *NIX...but I'll stick with good old WindowMaker. :PAll these little cubes do everything I need.

Some times i like KDE, sometimes im in a minimalist mood and i go for iceWM, ive tried them all.. and i always end up with my fave 3.. KDE, GNOME and iceWM.

Same for me...KDE 1 and KDE 2 I wasn't too fond of..KDE 3 is much better...Gnome...I hated Gnome 1, Gnome 2 wasn't exactly my favourite ether, but nice to see that it wasn't another windows-wannabe...I love CDE, but it requires some extra jugglong...and then I've tried enlightenment, xfce, etc...but I always end up coming back to good old WindowMaker.
