Win2k Users Suffering From Svhost Crash ? Not bcoz of blaster worm - any solutions

Hi,
any of you still using win2k out there ? my svchost crashes pretty frequently - the system still keeps on working but copy-paste cannot be done anymore. i've got all the service packs & hotfixes. plus i've got a regularly updated bitdefender pro av paid version ( i really dont feel like compromising when it comes to a decent AV) - please don't come up with a response that i've got some worm, coz i DONT. on top of that my c: drive where i've put nothing but win2k and some common apps is locked up by this program called DriveShield that makes it completely write proof. still i keep getting these svchost crashes.. any solutions ?

P.S. I seriously recommend all of you to use either DriveShield or Deep Freeze Pro. Just google the terms and you'll get to their respective sites.

svchost would be troublesome to find a problem for as it controls so many services/processes yet hides them under it's own name.I would have a look through your services under Administrative Tools and disable services you won't need, you'll find a lot of the ones you come across use svchost.To find out what svchost is currently running, open up command prompt type "tasklist /SVC" and next to all the svchost processes should be the services, programs etc it is currently running, to which any of those could be the culprit to why it crashes.By disabling services you don't use, you might be able to disable the service that could be the direct result of svchost crashing. If you want to pinpoint the problem, then obviously it'll mean disabling one service at a time, until the crashing stops. I don't think there would be an easier way, unless the Administrative Logs provide any information but I usually ignore them as they don't provide anything useful.Cheers,MC

Thanks for the info.. all the unnecessary services are already disabled - i use Sissoft Sandra which runs a scan and lists all the ones which you don't need on ur system. Did that long back - and the crash rate subsided a little bit - but some of these days, I really don't know what takes over svchost - those are the days it decides to crash every 10 seconds or so.. j/k... but it crashes at least 6-7 times during those days, and then again next day onwards it would behave really for a period of 4-5 days and then, start repeating all over again.. Grrrrrr!!!!!!! So you can see why I don't really feel like playing the good host to svchost ?? Yikes... that was damned corny

try the latest service pack for your os, i believe that the latest updates is the only fixed for this

It is tough, since many virii attack SVCHOST... but one that some AV utils miss is w32.hidrag aka w32.jeefo...

+ This Mozilla Firefox - Friendly online scan tracked it down when some of the freebies failed... but as far as removal... ? It infected 13,200 something of my executables, including some of my personal products...

 

My solution:

I backed up all my non-executables and reformatted... Guaranteed to work... lol

 

Oh, and btw, in addition to those, I shared my win2k harddisk (the other runs linux) on my network and scanned with my only registered version of Norton AV 2005...

 

Even ol Norton's only solution was to attempt to delete infected files, not limited to, but including: SVCHOST.exe, LSASS.exe.... you get the idea...

 

Hope you got a backup of your stuff!!!!!!!!!

 

I bet you'll do so from now on though!

omg... i continually forget things... (yes, it may have to do with the hardcore psychoactives)

 

Switch to LINUX... KDE rules, and there are so many fewer virii anyways... Plus, the only things I'm unable to do (and that is taking into account even win32 programming) are using such programs as Reason, AcidPro, SoundForge, and 3ds Max......

 

that's why I dual boot, but if I could, I would 100% dump that MS nonsense...
