Why Do More People Use Windows? And No, Not Because Its Better

Many people when choosing an operating system simply look and say "Well more people use Windows, so it must be better!" This is not really the case, the reason more people use windows is because back in the 80s the main computer companies (at that time Apple, Microsoft and IBM) were at a crossroads, they had to decide what they really wanted to do as far as what they produced. The Microsoft corporation decided to give up making their own hardwear and focus completely on softwear. The Apple company decided to continue producing their own hardwear believing, rightly so, that having machines built to their own specifications would improve quality by a lot. Unfortunately this meant that the different companies that made computers for the Windows OS drove down the price of the machines (that's what happens with copetiton) and so all the people who wanted something cheep and able to word proscess went over to Windows. The reason that the Apple company has not died out is because many people choose quality, but I guess there are arguements for either OS.

Microsoft, to my knowledge has never made their own PC hardware. But the fact that more people use windows is due to the fact that Bill Gates worked out deals with the big manufacturers way back when windows 95, and he gave the OS at a dirt cheap price to the OEM's, and thereby secured for him self a huge market share. Because apple won't let another manufacturer use the MAC OS. You can buy it, but I don't think that it will work on all machines. Though, I could be worng about that.

 

At least that is how I understand it.

 

I think that Bill Gates is a marketing genious. I just don't like windows that much, that is why when I'm not at work, I am sitting behind my Mandrake Linux Machine.....

its not the Unix people#s fault... the Unix people were computer scientists, they made an OS which philosophy's and design has never been bested.

 

however billy was a buisnessman. he picked the perfect time to pay someone to write a dirty quick cheap OS, and sell it super cheap to the OEM's.

 

Pc's begin being sold with MS's OS pre installed, thats how he got is foot in the door, and he's still here now.

 

Unix was too expensive for home use, so people used MS-DOS.

however, now the best OS in terms of stability and security are... free.

also i heard that the MSN 7.0 beta is out and they are already working on the 8.0...it's true i've seen pics ...just search a bit on google

Msn messenger 7 beta is the latest one out so far (for some reason the file name sais its v.9 ???). You can get a copy here. I quite like it. It isn't that much different from version 6.2 which i previously had. A couple of the features are being able to nudge the person your talking to, an option to sign on in offline or away mode (something quitee handy for me cause I often can't be bothered talking but still want to know whos online) and of course some new smilies .

do any of you guys Use Kopete MSN messenger client ?it doesnt support video conferencing, but it does support spell checking, and language translation. very nifty

It sounds quite good and as I don't have a webcam I couldn't care less about the video conferencing. Is it free? If so where can I get a copy?

I use opensource platforms/software exclusively. At home I have debian, mandrake and freebsd machines. I like the *nix OS becuase it's opensource, has a real community supporting rather than a coperate supprt. I think the opensource philosphy allows for the best, most efficient code to be developed. It's there for eveyone to see and tweak at will. MS hides their code which baits others to do whatever they can to break or breach the code.

Has anyone read Eric Steven Raymond's The Cathedral and the Bazaar? I think his philosphy sums up why I support the opensource movement. Here's the abstract from this tale:

I anatomize a successful open-source project, fetchmail, that was run as a deliberate test of the surprising theories about software engineering suggested by the history of Linux. I discuss these theories in terms of two fundamentally different development styles, the ``cathedral'' model of most of the commercial world versus the ``bazaar'' model of the Linux world. More people use Windows, as all new PCs come pre-installed with it! For the majority, a new operating system is as likely as swapping their car for a spaceship. Most people just do not know what to do - or that there are even alternatives. It will take a big marketing campaign, and an amazing new OS to even attempt to dent the Windows monopoly. I'd lke to see a PC version of the Mac OS, myself.

Sadly, since apple considers itself a hardware company rather than a software company(which is sad, since software seems to be what they are best at), it is very unlikely that a PC version of macOS will come out. that being said, PearPC is a program trying to emulate the PPC chipset that macs run on. You could run Pear PC and install MacOS on a PC that way, but it would be a pain, and take a performance hit.

if i remember correctly, the last OS Apple created (MacOS 9) was sending the whole company down the pan. lol.

ive heared PearPC is actually quite fast, on the home page in the odcumentation there is a performace loss %, and its quite low, (cant remember the exact figure).

however if i was going to install MacOSX on my PC, i would first build a tiny, very highly optimised Linux From Scratch distro.
