Yes, if you're using Apache, Linux is the way to go.

However, in terms of help and ease in troubleshooting, Windows is definitely much better. So many more people use Windows than Linux, so you've got a lot of people to ask from.

Yes thats true... you will find more members using windows than Linux but when it is about performance Linux is better server than windows NT and 2000 based Servers...

Hey mate,

I've been using Linux/Unix for the past 4 years. Within the past 2 I have used *nix only at home. I have no windows or windows applications. I have found that by using *nix as servers and even desktop machines, I have learned a tremendous amount about the net and computers in general.

Also, because of the open source nature of *nix, it's extremely easy to get advice, answers to problems. Either via web based forums such as this or irc. If you want to try a linux distro try on of the bootable versions (Knoppix, Mepis or Ubuntu). I have used most every flavor and have settled upon Mandrake for home use (easy to set up, good selection of apps) and a debian based one for my servers (such as those bootable ones listed above).

I also use freebsd as a firewall and have used it on dedicated web servers in the past.

good luck

Linux is way more stable than Windows...

and only the dumbest idiot would run a server on a mac....

Windows 2003 well is ok..

But linux is probably the best way to go!

Ok, Macs now run OSX, which is based on FreeBSD, a unix version that is VERY good for servers. Apple even has a division which sells xservers which are macs dedicated to being servers. As far as being servers, they have the advantages of unix(difficulty of attack, exploits) and the benefits of easy administration. The downside is that you need a Mac to do the serving with.

That being said, you probably don't have a mac lying around, so go download redhat or something similar. Or browse around the web and see if there is a distribution that has good and easy to use serving utilities that don't have bad defaults(I assume you don't know a lot about linux, and therefore don't want to mess with low level config files that much).
