OS Talk Which OS do you think is the best?

What do you think is the best OS around to use? Something you can use in every aspect, "all around" type. Please vote in the poll, if it's in the Other, please specify. You could also brag about some if its features, some explanations and why you think it is the best. Windows XP SP 2 works fine for me because it is user-friendly, i'm not really good at using Linux.

I feel like this topic is already going in some other thread, but I'll voice my opinion again. Windows is OK for surfing web, email, word processing (and for playing games, for sure). But if you are serious about computers, and developing software, setting up secure networks, sharing files, remotely accessing computers, or otherwise doing anything technical with computers, all my votes are to Linux. It is free, compatible with most hardware, reliable, and secure. Did I mention free?

In my opinion, it depends a lot on the computer knowledge a person has. For any computer professional, I think Linux is the best choice, specially with the increased demand for linux, every computer professional needs hand-on experience in linux.But for for average Joe, I won't recomend linux yet. It still is behind Microsoft for desktop installations.

I like macs... But I only have experience with macs and windows. Macs are nice and easy to use. I heard they were selling their ideas out to other companies. I know the software is a little limited but it's all good lol. But i'm not too experienced in the hardware and software area though lol.

I've used Windows since it's long ago days as Windows 3.1 and through it's many morphs to my current OS of Windows XP Home Ed. I recently took the bait and decided to try out Xandros OS a Debian distribution of Linux. I read the blurbs and reviews and figured as a Linux newbie it sounded like the best bet for ease of installation and overall use. I'm sorry to say that my experience was not a good one. Software installation fast became a nightmare of shell scripting, builds, makes and make installs and other esoteric processes as opposed to good old Install Wizards in Windows! I also had the whole OS crash on me on several occassions - so much for reliability and stability! OK maybe it's just that I'm more attuned now to the vaguaries of Windows having not only used it personally for many years but having administered Windows networks for a good few years also but the 'out of the box' experience I had with Xandors did not endear Linux to me as a home OS.

Now I just know this post is gonna generate some responses (well I hope so!) but let me be clear - I have grown up with Windows and am now well past the heady days of command-line installations and batch scripts. I LIKE clicking on the install icon and just clicking a button in response to clear prompts. I don't want to become a Linux guru - I like the idea of open source anything and I really like the idea of competition in the market place for OS's but surely Linux can offer something better than this users experience?!

If anyone can point me to a Linux distribution more suited to my stated (and I feel humble) I will gladly revisit and (possibly) review my opinion re what's the best OS!

Well,, its not a very Fair Comparason. You compare Compiling the software yourself in linux, to using an install Wizzard in WIndows....

If you Compare using an "install wizzard" in linux to compiling your own software in windows, then the results would be LINUX is easyer...

you HAVE to make fair comparasons... For example, why not compare Windows Install Wizzards againsed Emerge (Gentoo's install "wizzard")

ANywaw, like you said, you are fully locked into microsoft, your grown to depend on it (which is what every ocmpany wants or its customers)

Its Like Me Telliing you that french IS a BETTER language... even if i proved fresnch is better, you would still prefere english as you already speak it.

Just like for me... Ive have 2 different computers... ive tried windows95, windows98 windows 2000 and even windows XP.. and i cant get any of them to work preperly !

Actually, Windows and Linux are about the same I think. Most of the people in USA use Windows because that's what comes with the package if you buy a new computer. In Europe, where they use mostly Linux, it's the same deal, I think. And also, don't forget about the Mac OS. That's also pretty popular if people like Macintosh computers. I'm usually not a Mac fan, but the Mac G5 is definetely something to drool about.

I grew up on Windows and I can happily say I've never looked back since switching to Mac. I've never used Linux, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Ditto for Unix; then again, it's the underlying base of Mac OS X, so if one's good, they're both good.

Actually the MacOSX is based on FreeBSD... which in turn is an open source Unix clone.

 

SOmeone (dont know who) once said that those who dont understand unix are doomed to re-create it poorly for all eternity.....

 

Luckily, for the Mac, the eternity only lastered untill MacOS-9, and the unixification brought the company back from the brink of extinction.

Mac OS X is such a birlliant OS which I am quite enjoy that, but actually, I use windows 3.1 untill windows xp, seems all right for me since that not so many virus effected on my WIN machine. But the security on MAC is much better than windows, that is only my own opinion.

windows seems like an unfinished OS..

 

for example.. with a proper operating system, open an exe file ina text editor (or hex editor) and attepmpt to save changes... it will not allow it.... but windows will !

 

and this is the reason virii can infect other files on your windows machine, but Linux / Unix / BSD is immune.

The best OS of my choice is Windows. The main reason is wide compatibility of Windows to many softwares and hardwares. Another thing is it is cheaper than a Macintosh. That is why Windows is intended for most home users. The disadvantage however is security and crashes.I also use Macintosh, and what I can say is it is by far the most secure OS in the market. The downside is, it is more expensive because the computer comes directly from Apple. Also, you won't get wide variety of softwares for it especially games. Macintosh is made especially for photo and video editors.Linux on the other side is one of the most fastest, secure, and hardest OS to learn. Linux is still on it's early stage. Maybe in the future, it might and it might replace Windows. Who knows.

My favourite OS is Windows, as it is the standard. Most/All hardware is compatible, and it is just easy to use.

There is no such thing as "best OS" !!! I use windows most of the time but i have & linux [slacware 10] i think that win & lin are the "best OS" but evry one was own special opinion.

Yes, that's why I said "What do you think is the best OS around to use?" in my first post. "The best" depends on the opinion of the user.
