Linux Server & Cpanel Alternatives ?

HiDue to the price of CPanel that will be out the window if I build a server, the OS I will be using is RedHat Linux as its free. Are there any CPanel alternatives that are compatible with this?Thanks

I'm not sure; you can go to http://www.hotscripts.com/ to try and find a cPanel alternative, however.

I would suggest using Webmin as it's quite a good one and is being used by a number of people. Check it out at http://www.webmin.com/.

I will second the suggestion of Webmin. I use it on several Linux servers myself, and it is quite robust. Not perfect, and not as pretty as cPanel, but still very good for a free tool. The Virtualmin module in particular is a godsend for those of us that need to manage multiple websites.

i ALSO surgest a different distro... any distro that isnt dead...

Redhat dies with version 9... Redhats FREE distro is not called Fedora Core... The latest stable version is Fedora Core 2. but fedora core 3 is due out soon.

BUT, thats only if you want to stick with redhat...

if you think you are upto it, Slackware is a much better server distro. (and quite fast after a kernel re-compile)

OR.. if you REEALY want to go for it, and get a super uptodate, super stable, super fast distro, try Gentoo !

What about SuSE isn't it a good, stable, fast distro of Linux? I've heard a lot of people mention it, and the job I'm going out for wants to switch from Redhat to SuSE do to licensing issues but other then that I'm not to familar with Linux. I'm sad to admit that but I'm not, shame on me, I'm having to give myself a crash course in it.

There's an alternative to cPanel named Plesk (http://www.parallels.com/) - it's got a pretty good GUI but functionality wise it's not even half as good as cPanel.Webmin is meant more for internal server administration - not really designed as a control panel for webhosting, as it lacks a lot of those features that you find on cPanel. But its an excellent server management tool - no qualms about it.

I once took a short look at Webmin, what I saw for sure is that Webmin at least gives you much more possibilities to configure your system than expensive Confixx does. GreetingZ
