Getting Mozilla Thunderbird To Listen To Message Filters

Recommended Posts

Hi,I have a problem with Mozilla Thunderbird, my email client, and I was wondering if anyone here knew the program enough to be able to help me.The reason why I seem a bit gobsmacked to resolve the problem is because it has never happened before.I have set up a contact form on my website, and that form, upon receiving some input, send an auto response to the one who submitted the data, but also a notification to the webmaster (me in this case), together with the data submitted. For practical reasons I have opted not to store the submission data into a database, as it would be pretty pointless, as the form is mainly for passing on comments or asking questions. However, the problem I am experiencing is that the person who fills in the form gets his (or her) confirmation email, but I do not (or at least so I thought).Upon closer inspection now, I noticed my emails go straight to the Spam folder, as I said before, this has never happened to me before with any form I ever made.I have therefore tried to set a Message Filter in Mozilla Thunderbird, which goes as follows:If Subject contains "New submission for the form" AND From contains webbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk (the address that sends out the form) and To contains webbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk (this is also the recipient address for form data) then Set Junk Status to Not Junk AND Move message to inbox on webbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk.I have also set the filter to run at Checking mail, and I have also set it to apply to the Spam folder of webbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk, but, time after time a) The apply to goes back to "Inbox" onwebbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk instead of "Spam" on webbie@vlaanderen-flanders.org.uk, and also, inevitably, the emails keep ending up in the Spam box.Is there anyone who knows how I can make Thunderbird obey the filter and how I can keep the "Apply to" on the right folder?Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi mrdee,If I have understood the problem well I would look at the cause of the problem in the code that sends the email in the first place before trying to solve it from Mozilla Thunderbird.First you need to try accessing your emails using a different client. If it's still doesn't work then obviously it's not a Mozilla Thunderbird problem. You'll need to check the email settings in your form and make sure that they conform to your SMTP server. In some email servers a message will be considered a spam if it doesn't have a FRMK field in the heder.May be I can help if Iknow more about the email settings/code of your form without revealing any passwords, usernames or any personal information.

Thank you for your reply, mamer.I find it hard to believe the form would be at fault, since it has never occurred to me before with any form I created. It also happens at the web based version of my email (I use Gmail with my domain name).I have also tried in Windows Live Mail and exactly the same thing happens.I have always set the same values for sending and receiving and never had any trouble. As a means of testing I have changed the To: address and now they arrive.Thank you for your assistance, but I think it'll be best to take it up with the author of the program I use to make my forms, after all, I have been beta testing it and all subsequent upgrades since day one. Thanks again.

mrdee,I think one of the criteria that some webmail service providers use to determine if an email is spam is to determine if the From address of the email is in the addressbook. Of course, there is the content analysis of the email itself but there are points assigned based on whether the sender is a known contact, for determining if the email should be considered spam. There are different criteria used, and some email clients even use neural networks so it is hard to tell what weightage each of the factors would have.I cannot help you with the message filters in Thunderbird because I have only used them for routing messages to appropriate folders and forwarding email to other email accounts. Perhaps you can report it as a bug on the Thunderbird forums because of the message filters are set up correctly, there may have been other users with the same problem and therefore there may be a bugfix or a patch that you can apply to get it working.
