Sharks Less Dangerous Than Humans?

Recommended Posts

It has been often told and shown to us that sharks are beings of prey, they spill the blood of other organisms across the sea. There were movies made on the horrifying incidents where human beings have fallen prey to the "JAWS" of these predating fish, I also remember various pranks being played on people where just a shark tail is used and that drives the hell out of the people swimming in the water.

The hunters, as they are mostly depicted come in more than 350 species, and as a matter of surprise, it comes down to us as that they need to be protected. There has been some assessment done by the group Oceania where they observed close to 307 species of sharks and found that 50 of the species could be categorised as "endangered". However, under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the white, whale and basking sharks stand to receive protection. The International Union for Conservation of Nature maintains a list which is known as the "Red List" and deals with the endangered species that require to be taken care of. Sharks have occupied the top position in that list as they are the most vulnerable marine beings. The dangers that they supposedly face are

Finning, bycatching and fishing pressure .

The myth related to sharks preying on humans has been falsified, as it has been found that out of all only 20 species consume human meat. The International Shark Attack file reveals that in the year 2011, only 12 deaths have caused due to shark attacks, whereas in the fisheries regulated by humans, millions of sharks are being killed, so the picture stands clear as to who needs to be more protected.

So, as we have the power of conserving the nature, why not take a step and even if we do not have the time to make an effort to save them, lets not think about killing them.

Yes, sharks kill about 5 people annually all around the world, hippos are much mroe dangerous, but they don't look so dangerous, I once found this link and it was quite a good comparison what is much more dangerous than sharks:

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

So all of you should be careful with hippo's and not sharks :)

In animal world, including humans, predators don't eat other predators, they usually kill them, but don't eat them.

Here is a list of 10 most deadly animals and number 1 is a The Mosquito and a lot of them aren't even predators... Great White Shark is in the list, but it's said that it doesn't kill a lot at all. So all those movies made sharks to look really bad and dangerous.

The first that you have provided also lists deer to be one of the reasons that kills people, I just wanted to know how that happens. However, I would really thank you for providing us with the links and enlightening us about the myths related to sharks.

I think deers "kill" people in the road accidents, at least in my country a lot of accidents happen in the roads between forest, you drive a car 60-130km/h and suddenly a deer appears on the road, which usually ends with a car crash and maybe even deaths. I think it's what they wanted to say...Same with boars, which can also appear suddenly in the road, you usually kill it by driving on it or you get scared and turn off the road and die yourself :(

Yes, Bambi is responsible for a lot of human deaths. I would expect human fatalities in traffic accidents where they swerve to miss (or in some cases hit) the deer that can pop out of no where and jump right in front of you. In our neck of the woods it is unusual to drive many miles without seeing a dead deer along the road. And you would not believe what a full sized deer can to to a car, especially these newer lighter for fuel economy fiberglass car bodies commonly on the road today. Not long ago our son hit a raccoon in the road, and it did over $2,000 in damages to his car! Imagine what a big old deer would do. Bambi also contributes to human deaths ever deer season when crazy hunter are crawling around in the woods with high powered rifles and end up shooting each other instead of Bambi. There are probably nearly as many of those as there are shark kills to humans. But back to the shark thing. If there are 20 species of sharks that do eat people, would we not be ahead to continue to prey on those particular species? If the other 330 species of shark have some commercial benifit to humans for food or whatever why not take advanage of them? Do you think the sharks worry about us? Do they swim around in schools talking about how long it's been since they've had a tasty human and maybe they should start leaving any humans they find alone because we might be going extinct? Ok, sorry, enough of me being silly. What we need is common sence in our approach to the enviornment and all the creatures we share this planet with. Species have been endangered long before man learned to walk upright and type on a computer. Face it, when was the last time you had to dodge a Stegasaurus out in the road on the way to work? It is the natural evolution for species to grow and adapt to the changing conditions of the world or go extinct if they cannot. What we need to find is a healthy balance for the planet.

have you ever asked yourself, why would a shark attack a human? Sharks are definitely less dangerous than humans, even the great whites. Last I heard there are no humans living in the ocean for the sharks to be going after. Yes, it is true that sharks can detect human blood but it does not stimulate them as fish blood does. their sixth sense, the holes in their sides help them detect almost everything surrounding them, but that does not mean they're going to act on it. anyway thank you for the links.

I've actually heard this a lot. People often misunderstand animals by trying to group them all together (just like when someone is bit by, say, a dog, and assumes all dogs are vicious beasts). Even the sharks that do kill people, as far as I understand, are mostly based on finding prey through the scent of blood (meaning if you're not already bleeding and don't have something like a scab, they'll ignore you).

There's been quite a few videos of people underwater actually swimming with sharks, both big and small, without any real protection other than the suit they are wearing (which isn't going to stop a shark bite), and with no problems as a result.

if you are going to go swimming just make sure you are not bleeding and you have no open soresand you should be ok in the water even with sharks around, stay in coast don't go near the shark like trying to pet it that would be really stupid apart from that you should be fine in the water as long as you have someone with you and stay in coast.

Is this so that when a shark comes after you, you can outrun your friend and allow the shark to eat them instead? :P

" Is this so that when a shark comes after you, you can outrun your friend and allow the shark to eat them instead?" ROTFLMAO!! Ok, that was really funny! Now, there are people who climb dangerous mountains, people who wrestle alligators, and people who swim with sharks. Not me. I'll take my chances at getting dog bit, but everything else is for people who are a lot crazier than I am.

As someone said... if you are a camper and a bear attacks you don't have to be the fastest camper, just faster then the last one. ^_^

I also think the shark attack subject is highly overrated. Just like the plane crashes a case is sufficient to create in a global scare of the sharks. Of course they occasionally attack, but on a global scale the chances are extremely slim. Even if you live by a shark infested beach I'm sure there are more chances you die in a car accident then by a shark attack. But I guess for the media its for more thrilling to get a news about a tourist being the dinner of a shark then a car accident with fatalities.

In my country two weeks ago there was a huge media roar on a couple of bear attacks. In one case a bear was cough in a trap and the hunter (illegal of course) thought about poking the bear to death with a stick at which end he fixed a knife. Pointless to say it really annoyed the bear and somehow escaped the trap and showed the poor men who is in charge. Happy to say they haven't killed the bear afterwards as they usually do after an attack. Of course after watching this kind of news you'll think bears are the main cause of death for people living near woods. False of course.

The difference here is that when you bring bears into the equation, you're talking about very different primal instincts. Sharks are like most animals; they eat when they're hungry. Alligators and crocodiles as well. Bears, on the other hand, maim to kill, with no apparent purpose other than that. They don't eat humans (I don't think). They just enjoy the sport. So while sharks aren't something to really worry about, bears most definitely are.

Ha Ha Ha...
I am delighted to find the funny note about being attacked by shark. Indeed, when death comes calling, a humble human becomes the most selfish person on earth.
I may be wrong to someone to say that everyone becomes selfish, but it is indeed true. Even a sage would give up his life and die, hoping for so called divine purity or "moksha". He is selfish as he wants "moksha". A person who commits suicide also is selfish as he runs away from trouble or unhappiness and thinks of his own problem and less about someone else's loss due to his act.
And we fear the unknown, sharks are unknown to almost all of us and we know them due to the documentaries or movies that we see. There are a few million sharks in the sea, (let us believe it) and they are there in the sea, killing only other fish and animals there. They do not destroy the sea eco-system, unlike humans, they do not go out of the sea on land unlike humans who venture out to sea to do every possible thing that damages the natural balance of the marine world.
Have you gone to watch the national geographic documentaries on marine world? Have a look and you'll find that sharks are as friendly as other animals. But every other animal fears the unknown, and so does the sharks and when they see unknown i.e humans they attack and ofcourse being carnivores they eat what humans are made of. Humans eat more varieties of animals and insects, and if you apply your head you'll surely feel for the sharks, they way they are projected as fearful.
