Viewing Files

Recommended Posts

Here I go with another dumb computer question. Is there a way to make my computer stay on the "view thumbnails" when I am viewing cd's that I've burned pictures and stuff on, instead of just showing the album names? It drives me nuts having to stop and click back on view thumbnails every time I have to open an album when I am looking for a particular picture. I even loose it when I hit the back button and go back to the main list on the cd. It's really annoying, and I hate looking for lost pictures as it is. I have so many years worth on so many cds. I was also wondering if there was a way to make a print out of all the file names that are on the cd (after it's allready been burned) It won't let me copy/paste the files when they are open.

Even though I do not use windows now, but I do know that we can set system wide folder view. Its probably in Tools > Folder options. Check it out. Once you choose a particular view its applied to every view, not just when you view CD's.I would rather recommend some kind of Media organizer for music browsing than the built in File browser. Interestingly a commercial File Manager is out there for free on brothergiveaway.com . As of now just 2 hours remaining.

Well, using a file manager for browsing pictures is so 2000 anyway, sheepdog! :D
Here is a list of applications you can use. I would go for Picasa if I were you. Irfanview is great for batch-conversion and the rest of the list is unfamiliar to me. The page title is Gwenview alternatives because Gwenview is a Linux program to do manage pictures. So I was searching for windows alternatives to that. Usually it would be me searching for Linux alternatives to Windows software but this is what it has come to. :)

The answer to you first question is very easy, you can not set a particular view type for a cd because every time you put a cd in your cd-rom windows will decide how to show the content related to its contents itself so for doing this you need fist set a particular view type for each folder you want to burn on the disc, this can be done by going to properties of the folder and in the customize tab you can choose from various types like music, pictures, etc. so set it on the picture and every time you put cd in your cd-rom you will see thumbnails as default. The answer to your second question is easy too, you need a 3rd party software and i will introduce you one which will do the job just great. Karen’s Directory Printer is the name of the software which is capable of printing names and many other things like created date and modified date , attributes, extension, size and even MD-5 hash of the files in specific folder for you, when you give it a folder it will print names of the files in that folder and all of its sub folders so if you just choose your CD-Rom drive so all of the folders in it and all files in them should be included in your prints, here is the software : http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

Any way for seeing pictures on a disc i never suggest you to use windows explorer because it has no feature related to viewing huge number of pictures, i never used ACDsee Photo manager but it seems to be a real professional software for viewing these type of CDs but it is a little too expensive :D . i have seen picasa and it seems to be a nice free alternative for ACDsee but my suggestion is digiKam which is free and opensource, it is designed for linux KDE but you can use it in windows too and its interface is beautiful too, here is the windows version :

Baniboy, you are just too funny! Here I am so proud of myself that I can even turn this stupid computer on and surf the net and your saying I'm outdated and old fashion! Oh well, your probably right! :) I did read some on Picasa, if my old outdated ideas are correct, you are actually storing your files online with Google??? I'm not sure I'm real crazy about that idea, especially since Google thinks it's perfectly acceptable to spy on my when I'm skinny dipping in the pool and having that available online. Also in the comment section, someone mentioned that useing it make your pictures Googles pictures if they want to use them for anything. Don't know if that's true, but it sure would give me cause for using it too. I'm not so sure adding another viewing programis what I want to do though. Hate to clutter up the computer with all sorts of programs that eat up space, when I have one that works now. Just cause it doesn't work the way I want it to. Thanks for the link Web Designer, I didn't find exactly the answer, but there was some good reading there, I picked up a few other things that are useful. And to Inyila, thanks, I am going to give that download a try. I have the worst time trying to figure out what is on what cd. At least a list of the folders would be a big help. Thanks guys.
