Cobol / Jcl / Cics Mainframes

I just wonder , why is that none over here speak / write about Mainframes ?? is it that it is a old, stone age technology which is being used today ?? or is it that no one is into that what ever it is .. Just to convey. COBOL is the Application Programming language which is used in main framesJCL is the Job control language which is used in main frames.CICS - This is used for online application development in main frames. Is there any one over here who is into mainframes ?? do reply please

i studied about mainframes in college, not too much just a general idea and the basis. you know, how they was working, their CPU, integrated circuits, memory, programming language. we even had a one in our department so we can check. however, they didn't give us detailed information about mainframes, just the basics because as you said they are the stone age technology. therefore getting in details won't be beneficial a lot. especially because my major was computer science and programming language not system engineer.that's all i know about mainframe or at least what i remember, but i wonder why are you so interesting in mainframes this much?

Hi!@nirmaldanielMainframes are not really stone age technology... they are just as relevant today for high-reliability computing as they were back in the old days. There are tales of military mainframes that continued to work after having a bullet (I can't say that I believe it completely because I read about it on the Internet, but it is possible that an enemy secret agent/spy infiltrated a military base and shot a hand gun at a mainframe, hoping to see the system go down... but if he was really a secret agent, he would know about the redundancy implemented in mainframe systems... or perhaps he was aiming for the scientists and a stray bullet hit the mainframe) go through a system board because the components are built with redundancy in mind.COBOL is used in many software development service firms in India, such as IBM and Cognizant, and large multinationals have mainframes and mainframe developers of their own. Mainframes are not as common as they once were because most of them have been replaced by multiple cheaper Wintel (Intel processor based systems running Windows) machines because they are so much cheaper to maintain when it comes to human resource planning.

@ web_designer : I am not talking about mainframe system administration, I am talking about the mainframe programming, things like COBOL, JCL , CICS , DB2 , VSAM. And i am much interested in this because i am into it now. And this is the first time i am coming across these thing so i wish i had some one to share what ever i wanted to and some one to teach me what ever they have experienced in this field Thank you
