Forum Template Mock-up

truefusion

So after some brainstorming, i have asked myself, If i were to redesign the forums' template, how would i do it? Being unwilling to forget the design i thought up, i decided to write it all out in simple, static HTML. The only unfortunate part is i have no idea how to make IPB (or any forum system) templates, but i still wanted to code it out though it is just simple HTML. I thought i would share what i have so far just for the sake of receiving some criticism. I should mention the color scheme isn't necessarily part of the design; the current choice of colors is merely for the sake of having different shades; the focus, what i am concerned with the most, is on the structure. In comparison to the current template, i would say my design is more user-friendly and easier to work with. The only downside perhaps is that things are a bit bigger, therefore requiring more scrolling to reach the end of the page (but i wouldn't necessarily call that a significant problem). However, this allows the user to sit back while navigating the site, rather than having to lean closer to the screen in order to see what is listed. Note also that the mock-up mostly assumes that the currently logged in user has at least moderator privileges. You'll notice most options, including moderation options, either at the top following you as you scroll or next to each post. This would make moderating or dealing with posts by any user easier (i.e. why should we have to scroll all the way down for moderation options? or click on a JavaScript drop-down list for user options?).Do to the fact that some people in these forums like to sign off their posts (though it may be illogical to do so), i figured that could be avoided by placing the username at the end of the user's post (though i'm sure that is slightly wishful thinking on my part—even if i were to change the post footer to "Regards, username").Anyway, i have attached the mock-up for viewing.knowledgesutra.zip

I think smaller font would be in order.IPB skin is constructed in many different formats. And each "file" are in specific name based. Because, when uploading the skin to the forum the skin script looks for file names and associates it accordingly. To see how IPB skin is structured, visit Invisionize and download one of their skins. Unzip and see how it's structured. Copying how they did the coding would be the fist easiest way. There are skin generators and such but with your abilities I believe you'll be more frustrated with auto generators. And remember, the key to a good IPB is icons, icons and icons. That includes buttons. They slave over icons, pips and buttons until they bleed! LOL.Good initial job! And congratulations on getting your website listed in Xisto's home page! You are one of very short list.PS what do you think about doing away with signing off and just let them sign off? myCENT is quite good at calculating things and a phrase or a name would not make that much of difference with the new credit system... just a thought.

Turns out any frustration may occur in either scenario. I went to Invisionize and downloaded random, free IPB skins that are compatible with the IPB version that is used here, only to find out that the code is mostly encrypted (in XML files). I am uncertain of the encryption method used, though it is obviously a method that can be reversed. For that reason i cannot say if my mock-up is even possible for IPB boards, but it would explain slightly why most IPB skins generally look the same?that the style may be imposed upon the designer.

Either way is fine with me, just note that i have observed some people adding sub-titles (if you will) to their username when signing off their posts, though rare these cases may be.

*Sigh*Times are changing... and perhaps we are in time for revisiting some of our forum rules.By the way, have you looked at new skin designs for this new forum version?
