Awstats Top Urls Legend Explanation What does enter and exit mean

Recommended Posts

I was looking at the awstats Top 25 url. There are two columns titled "Entry" and "Exit". What do they mean? Aren't the "Entry" value supposed to be the same as "Viewed"? Consider this example:

As you see there is a huge difference in the "Viewed" and "Entry" values. And it is for a zip file. And I guess the "Exit" column denotes the successful transfer of the file. Isn't it?

Another thing I wanted to to add, considering that the entry value is incremented, if anyone directly accesses the URL, then I think these statistics are wrong. Because I have had almost all (above 100) the downloads of the file straight from software review sites. Basically I want to know, the geographical location of people who are downloading the files. I am still searching for such a script which would do this job. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Entry and Exit columns describe how many people entered your site on that page (Entry) and how many left your site at that page (Exit). So, if the first page someone sees of your site is page1.htm then that page's Entry counter will increase. If the last page they look at it page5.htm (and then they go off to another website) then that page's Exit counter will increase. So, your statistics show that 42 people went to that ZIP file before seeing any other page of your site, and for 40 people it was the last page they saw before going off to another website, or closing their browser.

Hmm, I see. I was thinking that the entry value is incremented at the start of download and exit value is incremented after successful transfer of a file. Thanks for explaining that.In my case the values are not matching with the stats showing links from external page. There are above 100 links coming straight from other sites, but the "Entry" values for them are only showing 40 or so. I think the masking of the the download links in those external sites is causing this problem. Anyway, I am now trying Analytics, its up and showing the stats. I was wondering how do I add the analytics javascript code for zip files? Or am I required to create a new profile with the zip link?

Why does Google Analytics show very few visits per day, but Awstats may show dozens? Thanks.
