Deviantart.com 4/10

Website: Deviantart

Rating: 4/10

Review:

The good stuff:

Deviantart is a great place for great artists to congrigate, criticise and share their work. With over 21,800,000 (that's twenty-one-million, eight-hundred-thousand! :) ) submissions, there is many images to choose from. There is plenty of different catagories of submissions to choose from and you can see all of the other artists 'styles'.

The bad stuff.

Deviantart is also plagued by 13 year old school girls who spend most of their time on the internet. Also, along with all the reasonable submissions, there is plenty of other submissions that I will say 'need work'. Well, these people will submit these 'more deficient' submissions and these school girls will refuse to criticise in any way, shape or form. They often submit plenty of messages like "Good work, keep it up" or "I <3 this one!" (keeping in mind that these submissions are 'way below par'). Deviantart is plagued with very lame comments and terms and just to list a few:

1. '<3'

2. 'Instant fav'

3. 'Kawaii'

4. 'teh sex'

5. 'I want to adopt this image'

6. 'NO!!!11! ITS ALL MINE!!!1!!'

7. 'huggles'

8. 'snuggles'

9. 'cuddles'

10. 'wuggles'

Clearly, with all these people plaguing Deviantart, there is no hope for decent submissions. If anybody submits an image, that would be perfect if it wasn't for the littlest flaw, any criticsm is very quickly over-run by "I love it! FAV!" and many of the other comments listed above. You also have the option when submitting a submission to encourage criticism, discourage criticism, neutral or disable comments all together. Well, these mostly don't affect any of the comments recieved. It almost could drive a normal person insane with all these comments and I would prefer it if a filter was installed for them.

Anyways, my rating is 4/10 and that is being very generous.

I can understand your critism of Deviant Art. It has some issues in the regard of the young people who are stuck being teeny boppers. But my experiences with DeviantArt are not nearly as negative as yours. Yeah I get the occational comment like the above but I also do get occational constructive critism too. I am there for the most part to help support some of my friends. I do have alot of poetry and some photos taken by me as well as some friends. I have tried to give constructive crits when I can. I sometimes feel that I don't really have a right to say anything because I hardly know someone. When I do offer crits I try to be constructive and kind about it because I know that sometimes people are sensitive and emotionally attached to their work.

I think deviantart is a great place for artists of all kinds (especially digital artists, like me), but I agree about the type of people on there. It seems that a HUGE amount of the member base are either strange anime fangirls or art fanatics who wouldn't know real art if it smacked them in the face. Then of course, there's those who think they've created the next world masterpiece, regardless of how bad it is.But if you find the right kind of people to be friends with, it can be a great place to learn, share, and show off. Which is what I like best.@cgrim -- I think you read the post wrong.

That is exactly how I feel about the place. Everyone feels proud about their work whether it is really good or not and some do get carried away and will go a little to far but I do think they really do have some great artists there. I used to go there to download brushes for Adobe Photoshop and I have seen some of the art and it is amazing what some of those people can do. It is a great resource.

I disagree with that review. I do think that there are some immature characters at DeviantArt.com, but it truly is a revolutionary art system. I love looking through people's art and tutorials. DeviantArt.com has value. HIGH value at that. It would not have as many members as it does had their not been some little teeny wierdos there in the first place.

I like the way Deviantart is organized. It has many cool stuff like wallpapers, themes etc..... I specially like the themes section(shell themes). SO I would give 9/10 to deviantart

DeviantART was originally a skin/resource website but then became more of an organised art community. I use it, I submit my works every now and then, and I never get any comments like "huggles". The only time I see those such comments is on more "famous" people on deviantart. It is also a very popular website, and that's because people like it. You can learn from people's critism, from tutorials, and from looking at other people's works. There is also alot of skins and themes, ranging from winamp skins to visual styles. There is also alot of wallpapers. This site should atleast get a rating of 7/10, but I would give it a 9/10.

As with most of the responses here I also feel that this is overly harsh on deviantart.com, for the main fact that is simply is not a review of the site but a review of the people that use that site. The site itself is very well designed and easily navigable (sp?) with the works clearly split into predefined (and get still flexible) categories, this is however more noticeable in the upload process. The community aspect of deviantart is perhaps one of the better I have seen on the web, if you so choose to use the community aspects. The wide selection of artwork available on deviantart also goes in its favour and to claim that the variable quality of the submissions is a bad point of the site (it is after all a site review, ok so I know content is important, but it is more important when it is not user content). I know when other sites in this vein impose quality controls it makes it difficult for newcomers to get their work showcased (and to ultimately gain feedback which will help them better there work). Deviantart.com has grown to become possible the biggest art community on the web (I've discounted Flickr, because it is solely aimed at photography) and this cannot be used against it, ok so you may not like some of the comments (by the way from my experience the comments posted there are almost always relevant and usually contain alot of feedback which is invaluable to budding artists digital or otherwise). Overall I'm going to give deviantart.com a 9 out of 10.

I like deviantart. It's a great place to get inspired or just simply to look at other peoples' work. Whether you're a serious artist, or if it's just a hobby, deviantart is a great place to display it.
