Get My Pc Files Accessed Anywhere Getting my PC as a server

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how i can get my PC so that i can look at my files anywhere. I have a PSP and i can listen to my music anywhere in the house using a RSS channel. I want it so i can do it anywhere with internet access. I know i have to get it as a web server, but how. I don't know how to unlock port 80 (thats the right port right?) Is it the ISP i have? Is it the DSL modem i have? Any help would be great thanks.

Humm...tghe first thing is to check your firewall for its access on port 80 and obviously allow it from any computer as thats what you'd need for a web server type machine. I guess you already have a webserver program installed but you might have to do some configuration with that methinks. You might want to check your ISP info about it aswell, i cant see them being a problem but its worth a check and also remember that as youll be using it as a webserver the bandwidth usage will go sky high so if your isp has an upload limit or bandwidth usage limit then you might want to watch it closely. Also it will depend on your connection speed as to how quickly you can download music from it onto your psp obviously. Other than that i cant see many problems but ive never set up a true webserver, i used my webserver program to make a local server and it worked on my mini network but i dont know about the web. Best thing is trial and error, just remember the security issues of having your port 80 widely accessible by the web make sure your firewal checks traffic and can block it on its own if it needs to and such like to make sure no-one gets past your public html folder(s)

Well I have no idea how to set up a web server software. I have a http server so that i can access my files from my house. Is that what you mean? Also i have turned off my firewall in tests and that dosnt work. I only have the XP firewall. I don't like a 3rd party firewall.

You actually don't need a web server port open. That will open up an oppertunity for MANY hackers too. :) Yikes! If you are willing to pay for $69.95 a year, you can get LogMeIn Pro to remotely access your computer and also the following features:File Sharing, File Transfer, Secure Access, Remote Control and also Remote Printing. However, you can try LogMeIn Pro for 30 days and then either buy it or use LogMeIn Free, which only allows Remote Control.

To be honest... I'd rather spend 20 dollars 1 time on a good firewall instead of a fee of $70 each year. Plus the free service is for a LAN so its not ANYWHERE. it has to be within local area.
