How To Solve Increasing Menu Navigation Lists As I add pages, column gets longer - what to do?

Recommended Posts

The column on the left is the "navigation" menu. Every time I add a page, it grows longer and upsets the balance of my page. Eventually it will run to the end and the other items there now will go where? I don't know what to do. (I'm a newbie - have a heart) Seems like I will need a different kind of menu - any ideas?

Thank you :)

Seems to me that you don't need to list all those websites in the left-hand navigation. Just have the link to a page which then has a list of those links.

What you could do is make one main menu with just the main things and then when the person clicks that you have a submenu which you can emphasise as a submenu by either giving it a diffrent color (background or text) and also moving it a bit to the right of the main menu so that the person can see that its a submenu. I think this is a little bit hard to do if you arnt very experience in web coding and dont know php but if you want to do it the hard way in html and have a html site for each page then you can just code each site by hand :)Or You can for example ground Essential sites IMO and My favorite sites into just one link which is LINKS and then you have those sites on that page. Its not really wise to have all of you pages on the main page since the page just gets cluttered and unorganised for the viewer. Try to categroies the links and then make one page that has links to those pages :)

Personally I think you are better off making categories. Break them up into these likeThe BasicsWeb HostingPage ConstructionGraphicsSEOetc etc etcLike that. that way you can then add sub links to each page, pertaining to the Parent subject. Drop downs are nice, but if you want this to be a true newbies POV, then design it like a book. An outline. I think that works the best, and people understand what you are trying to do.

Check out the menu at this site. You probably could use something like this. I have a copy of the a script for it if you need it. You have to understand the basics of the construction in order to use it.

Menu in upper left corner.

I use a Table of Contents that links to menu pages on my site. Take a look. I do use picture menus, but you could use text menus for your site. Like Moolkye suggests.
