I don't think the two are really as comparable as they may seem. They are obviously both scripting languages, but they were designed for two very different purposes. Perl was originally intended only for local use, allowing large jobs to be easily automated through it's scripting power, and was only developed into a CGI for Web use later on. PHP, however, was created with the Web in mind right from the get-go; and in that sense, it may be considered somewhat better for use in such an environment. In my opinion, Perl is more powerful than PHP, but isn't ideally suited for use online; for creating dynamic websites, I think PHP is better.

Sorry my "friend", but you can't make questions like this one, or better, you shouldn't because php and perl are somewhat different server side web languages.Important Definitions you must knowServer side web languages:The script (in php or perl) runs on the server sideClient side web languages:The script (in javascript and/or in html) runs on the client's browser sidePhp, in my opinion, is much more easy to work with, and most of people (developers, webdesigners and programmers) think and feel the same way, but you could be one of the exceptions of this, i mean, after you try the 2 languages (find some good ebooks about php and perl, if you just can't find just send me a private message and i will help you with this), you could be more interested in perl just because you have less difficulties with perl then with php.As you can see, that's a subjective question, so you will have subjective answers, this is my opinion, now you have to "build" your opinion, and you can do it by reading good ebooks of both php and perl.

First thing...there is already a topic like this: http://forums.xisto.com/topic/1583-perl-and-php/

But...I think PHP would be more "useful" because it is supported by most web hosts. But the downside to that is that PHP has more bugs than Perl.

But both are different web languages, they shouldn't be compared, but I would much rather know PHP than Perl, because PHP would be more useful (in my opinion).

I'm think, that PHP is BEST, but PERL good web language too. I not wit to write on PERL, but I know that majority webmaster prefer PHP, and this not in vain

It'd be more apt to compare php and cgi, not perl. As cgi is usually implimented via perl...but it can also work with c++ or java.

Anyways, the quick answer to your question is another question: are you going to be making this for purely web applications? Or do you want it to be able to run offline as well? If you want it to be just online then i highly suggest using php. It is simpiler (easy opening and closing tags, little use for escape characters, etc), more powerful, and more secure than cgi.

On the otherhand, if oyu want to do local applications i suggest that you use c++ (for PCs) or java (for universal platforms) instead.

Just my 2ce.

Well, like someone sad, perl and php are build for diferent purposes. PHP first goal was to be more dynamic on web, but affcourse you can use it local to, but not that efective like perl. Becouse perl was for local use, i think that perl is more complex then php but again.Think on the net, for what langugae did you hear more ? php or pearl ?i think its php, yes it is becouse its for the internet.

I agree. I use PHP and Perl scripts in my projects.
Finally I think that PHP, Perl and ColdFusion is best script languages!
it's true.
