Transfering Domain Names General Inquries

Recommended Posts

Ok so i dont really know if fthis is the right section to ask this but here it goes. I have a domain name registered by my Internet secive provider but it really sucks. It dosent support DNS and only forwarding which isnt real forwarding but it makes 2 frames one at 0% and one at 100% with your website in it. which is stupid in the first place because frames suck. So now i though about transfering it to a company that focuses on domain names so that i can have dns and stuff like that and not have think how stupid it is with frames?so my first question is: Do i have to wait for it to expire with my old registrant before using it with the new one?2) do i have to do something on the site of my old regisrar to accept/allow the new one to take it? and 3) is there anything else i should know when transfering a domain. thanks for your help?

First of all, would you care to tell us your domain name so that we can do search on DNS records? If you registered a domain name and cannot control your nameserver, that you really do not own that name. So unless you paid for it, you're not losing much. If you are paying for it review the fine prints because you're getting ripped off.The best way is if your domain name does not end with com, net etc (let's say you're currently under yourname.site.com) then all you need to do is purchase a domain name and tie it to your hosting. Yahoo is still offering some cheap domain name prices but there's always OpaQue.If you are paying for it and your current domain is TLD, ask for your money back (or partial money back) and see above advice.

I looked at the DNS record using SamSpade.org's Do Stuff feature, and found out that your domain registrar is 1&1 (is that correct?). As far as I know (I have two 1&1 US domains), they let you change the DNS settings. To do this, log into your 1&1 Control Panel and d the following:

In the Packages page, click on the pakage which has your domain.

Click Manage Domains in the Go Directly To list.

In the Manage Domains page, check your domain, click the arrow next to the DNS menu, and click Edit DNS Settings.

In the DNS Settings page, change the settings to include Xisto's nameservers (ns1.trap17.com and ns2.trap17.com).

I am assuming you have a 1&1 domain for this 'tutorial'.
