Recommended Posts

I have just found an excellent portal based on CMS called xoops it is quite good and it has a good administration system and they can be many blocks to add.
description:

XOOPS is a program that allows administrators to easily create dynamic websites with great content and many outstanding features. It is an ideal tool for developing small to large dynamic community websites, intra company portals, corporate portals, weblogs and much more. It can be installed on an Internet host with a PHP-capable web server (e.g., Apache) and a database (e.g., MySQL).
XOOPS is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is free to use and modify. It is free to redistribute as long as you abide by the distribution terms of the GPL.

What XOOPS stands for
XOOPS is an acronym of eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System. Though started as a portal system, XOOPS is in fact striving steadily on the track of Content Management System. It can serve as a web framework for use by small, medium and large sites.

A lite XOOPS can be used as a personal weblog or journal. For this purpose, you can do a standard install, and use its News module only. For a medium site, you can use modules like News, Forum, Download, Web Links etc to form a community to interact with your members and visitors. For a large site as an enterprise one, you can develop your own modules such as eShop, and use XOOP's uniform user management system to seamlessly integrate your modules with the whole system.

Pronunciation guide
The standard pronunciation of XOOPS should follow English rules, and you should pronounce it as [zoo'ps].

Key features of XOOPS

- Database-driven
XOOPS uses a relational database (currently MySQL) to store data required for running a web-based content management system.

- Fully Modularized
Modules can be installed/uninstalled/ativated/deactivated with a click using the XOOPS module administration system.

- Personalization
Registered users can edit their profiles, select site themes, upload custom avatars, and much more!

- User Management
The ability to search for users by various criteria, send email and private messages to users through a template-based messaging system.

- Supported World-wide
XOOPS was created and is maintained by a team of several hard-working volunteers working from all over the world. The XOOPS community has more than dozen official support sites around the world for support of non-English speaking users.

- Multi-byte Language Support
Fully supports multi-byte languages, including Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, etc.

- Versatile Group Permissions System
Powerful and user-friendly permissions system which enables administrators to set permissions by group.

- Theme-based skinnable interface
XOOPS is driven by a powerful theme system. Both admins and users can change the look of the entire web site with just a click of a mouse. There are also over 60 themes available for download!!

My old 'clan' website used to use this. It is very amazing in action with many options you can use. vBulliten is way better in my opinion, I have no clue why, but I still think it is the best. Lol.

they have different abilities in their forums, IPB is much more flexible and has much more mods and skins for their forum, and most are free... Whereas vBulletin amphiasis on professional forums where it attracts members in a way or another, but some of their mods are paid and requires money in order to use them, quite an expensive board to finace...

Mambo is also a very good portal too. They have even win in LinuxWorld:

The Mambo content management system defied the bookmakers by defeating Firefox, IBM and LTSP, when being judged for the best of the best at San Francisco LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, at the Moscone Center.

I haven't tried it though, but I've seen sites using it, and it looks really great.

IPB is just as good as a normal CMS. Its amazing. I mean the bfarber portal is so powerful and has so many plugins it is equal to nuke. IPB also comes with an IPB board unlike nuke which comes with a PHPBB board. :) I personally think IPB is the best script ever written and its mods are so advanced and fantastic. I personally think the IB pro arcade and the iB store are well written mods. Also such mods as custom page and article mods which allows you to add comments and ranks is also pretty nice as well.

Mambo is great and has everything that I would ever need. Drupal is also good. For a comprehensive comparison of hundreds of Content Management Systems (both open source and commercial), you can visit http://www.cmsmatrix.org/. It even allows you to search for CMSes with certain features and at certain prices.

Xoops is really, really good. I made few websites using the CMS. It has number of modules, just to be included by administrator. It's so easy to make new modules. New modules can be made as modules based on xoops rules, but also as blocks, as ordinary webpages. Xoops seems to be complex at the first sight, but the complexity is natural for huge benefits it gives.
