Go for phpbb2, its the most flexible free forum today, and it has cool addons and modification which makes your board look better and its overall is better than smf and yabb...

I think the link for phpbb is https://www.phpbb.com/... Most forums I visit are eiter phpbb, or someone just programmed their own forum.. I have two websites in planing, one of my own, and one I plan on making with a friend.. I guess I'll have to learn to install phpbb on my own, and set it up. We plan on using phpbb, so..

My recommendation is to use phpbb also.. It is easy, and has many different styles, and stuff.. Plus, my firend says phpbb is easy to extend, he does a little php programming, and has changed one of his forums (or is mod the word :P)

It depends really. I personally prefer phpbb because of the huge amount of features and ability to expand it to become an almost paid-like forum software. But, if you do not know any PHP or SQL, then you may have a few troubles trying to mod it. SMF/ YABB has a built in mod installer that finds latest mods from the servers and downloads and installs them for you. However, the control panel on SMF/ YABB is not that great. The current features of PHPBB 2.0.15 far out way SMF/ YABB, only when several mods are put into place. If you want something that has an extreme amount of oppurtunity to become better, then go for PHPBB. If you jst want a forum to make up a simple community for your website, then go for SMF.

Now I have personal experience using both phpbb and vBulletin message board/forum software.

I prefer phpbb2 over the vBulletin software. I found that vBullentin was not quite as user

friendly. phphh2 however is extremely user friendly and immensely versatile as far as

customization and such.

Noticed that someone was having a difficult time locating the site in which to grab the software.

Well, I advise to do as I usually do and go to Cnet Downloads at Cnet Downloads

and just query a search for phpbb and it most often comes up being one of the first few results listed.
