If you've played Civ games you probably remember that one way you can win without conquest is to build a ship and launch it into Alpha Centauri. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri essentially begins where the Civ games leave off. Its a lot like the Civ games but takes place in space. One thing that makes it unique, however, is that it gives the player much more control over the "faction" that he controls then you have over your nation in the first three Civ games. You get to control your factions politics, economics, values, and what type of futuristic society it will develop into later in the game. Different types of government, values, and economic systems have different strengths and weaknesses. Many of the more advanced concepts in Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri have been adapted into Civ IV.
