[edit] Story

[edit] Setting

The game is set in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.[3] The developers have indicated that they may also utilize additional locations, according to Game Informer.[4]

According to Grant Collier, one of Infinity Ward's co-leads, the game is not set in an existing conflict:

We wanted an enemy that is going to give the player a stand up fight. When people hear modern warfare, is that driving in a Humvee until an IED blows your tire off, then people shoot at your Humvee and you shoot back at them and they run away? Strangely enough, that's not Infinity Ward-style combat. So we are creating a robust enemy that is going to give the Western powers a run for their money. They use high technology just like we do.

[edit] Plot

A Russian nationalist by the name of Zakhaev is set on returning his homeland to the Soviet times. Zakhaev knows the United States would never allow this to happen, thus he funds a coup in the Middle East, organized by his ally al-Asad, to draw attention away from Russia. The two men and their seconds-in-command gain the nickname The Four Horsemen. However, the British and US governments have been monitoring Zakhaev's activities and discover his real intentions. The story is told from a perspective of a British 22nd SAS Regiment operative in Russia and American 1st Force Recon in the Middle East.

The game also features a flashback mission set 15 years ago in the Chernobyl Zone of Alienation, which features a new incarnation of Captain Price from 22nd SAS Regiment, the only character to appear in both of the first two games of the series. He needs to assassinate Zakhaev, but his mission fails because his Captain gets wounded and he has to get him out of the Zone of Alienation.[5] Whether this new Price will be confirmed to be a relative of the WWII era Price remains to be seen. It is also believed that the assassination attempt had left Zakhaev with only one arm.

The game features the following as playable characters:

* Lieutenant Price, 22nd SAS Regiment (15 years ago)

* Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish, 22nd SAS Regiment (present)

* Sergeant Paul Jackson, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment (later Staff Sergeant as part of 1st Force Recon Co., U.S.M.C.) (present)

Note: Names are seen in mission info which is seen in published gameplay footage of the game. Further characters are unknown.

[edit] Multiplayer

For multiplayer, it has been confirmed that Call of Duty 4 will include a class system which has five preset classes with default weapon load outs and perks assigned to them as well as allows users to create five custom classes where the user can customize their weapon load out and three perks to assign to their soldier. The five default classes include Assault, Spec Ops, Light Machine Gunner, Demolitions, and Sniper class. Create a class will be unlocked when the user gains enough Experience Points (XP), earned by killing his/her opponent, and becomes a Private (level 4), and will increase rank with more XP earned. XP will also vary depending on the type of match the user is playing. Only two of the classes are available to a first time player; the rest are unlocked as the player gains more experience online and gains higher rank. The highest known level as of now is level 55, which unlocks Prestige mode. You'll be able to save and name your custom classes for quick access in multiplayer matches. Most of the new weapons and perks that you can use to outfit your custom class will be unlocked as you gain experience ranks, but there are also a separate number of challenges associated with each weapon that will subsequently open up new add-on gear as you complete them.

[edit] Perks

Another introduction in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer includes Perks. Perks are special abilities which allow users to further customize their character to their personal play style. The amount of perks available in multiplayer has not been announced however it has been confirmed that the player will be limited to three multiplayer perks at a time which can be assigned via Create a Class. Players can pick one per category. Perks are unlocked by achieving certain ranks.

[edit] Game Modes

* Free-for-All - Every man for himself.

* Team Deathmatch - Use teamwork to kill opposing players and reach score limit.

* Team Objective - Domination and Search & Destroy. Capture flags in Domination, with respawning. Destroy and defend objectives in Search & Destroy, no respawning.

* Team Tactical - Small team Deathmatch and Search & Destroy.

* Capture the Flag - Try to steal the enemies flag and return it to your base.

* Search and Destroy - There are two teams- attackers and defenders. Attackers try to plant a bomb at one of two bomb sites, and defenders try to defend the bomb sites. If explosives are planted, defenders must defuse. Players only have one respawn per round. Game is over when all players on one team are killed, or when the bomb blows up or is defused.

* Headquarters - A radio spawns somewhere on the map. Your goal is to capture the radio for your team. If Team A captures the radio, they must defend it from being destroyed by Team B. Team A will only have one respawn until the radio is destroyed or the max time limit for the radio is reached. Team B will respawn at set intervals. Team A earns points for every second the radio is held. To capture/destroy a radio, you must stand in the area of the radio. The more players, the faster you destroy it. New radio spawns when time limit is reached or the radio is destroyed.

* Domination - There are flags at certain points around the map. All flags start neutral. Teams battle to hold the most flags. Game ends when the time limit is reached, or the score limit is reached.

[edit] Trailers

The trailer, showing some in-game footage, was released April 28, 2007.[6] In the background, one may hear a speech given in Russian: Сегодня мы одна нация в условиях предательства и оккупации. The speech translates as "Today, as one nation, we shall rise in the face of treachery and occupation." Later, the Russian phrase Мы ничего не боимся, meaning "We do not fear anything" is said. Additionally, a final voice at the end speaks the Russian translation of a quote by Sun Tzu, author of The Art of War: "All war is deception" (Всякая война враньё). Also, in Arabic, one hears the statements "Enemy Forces Sighted" and "American Forces Nearby."

During E3 a trailer featuring actual gameplay footage was released. Starting in Prypiat, Chernobyl's Zone of Alienation, the voice of an SAS operative is heard saying: "50,000 people used to live here, now it's a ghost town..."

The voice then changes to Zakhaev's monologue in which he states: "Our so called leaders prostituted us to the West, destroyed our culture, our economies, our honor..." It then changes to Middle East, depicting a combat sequence. In the background, a woman's voice reading the news is heard saying: "...US Marines, stationed on high alert, were given the order to invade the small..." (apparently the country in which Al-Asad has organized the coup). It shows an execution of several civilians from the perspective of a driving car. It then cuts back to Zakhaev's monologue: "just as they lay waste to our country, we shall lay waste to theirs.", and shows buildings being destroyed as a result of a nuclear detonation.

Then an ICBM launch is shown, and a voice in Russian says: Вы все всё равно скоро сдохните, which translates as: "You will all soon die anyway".

The trailer also features war sequences in Cairo and Eastern Europe.

Some gaming magazines have been able to play demos from portions of the game, including a stealth mission, a helicopter battle, and driving a tank to a fuel depot.

[edit] Xbox 360 beta

It was announced at Microsoft's E3 2007 press conference that Infinity Ward would offer a Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Public Beta exclusively on the Xbox 360.[7] The beta was made available on Xbox Live starting in August 2007.[8] Infinity Ward also held a pre-release lottery in which they sent out tokens a week earlier to whomever could answer three trivia questions about the game.[9]

On August 27, 2007, CharlieOscarDelta.com was swamped with excessive traffic several hours before the beta sign up even began. Less than seven minutes into the sign up, all tokens had been reserved by users. Because of the large peak in traffic and almost two hours of server failure, Infinity Ward closed down its website temporarily for maintenance and "upgrades".[10]

On September 10th, Gamespot released a new special that allowed it's members to obtain tokens. Gamespot is distributing 100,000 tokens along the course of several days, using a first come first serve method. If a member is unable to obtain a code before the limit of that day is reached, they may wait until the next day to get one.[11]

[edit] Game Engine

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will run on a proprietary engine, and has next generation features such as true world-dynamic lighting, bloom effects, dynamic shadows and depth-of-field. "Bullet Penetration" is calculated by the engine, taking into account things such as surface type and entity thickness. Certain objects, such as cars, will be destructible (it should be noted that the environments are still indestructible). This makes distinguishing cover from concealment important, as meager protection such as wooden fences, thin walls and such will no longer provide sufficient protection. The bullet's speed and stopping power will be decreased after penetrating an object, and this decrease is calculated realistically depending on the thickness and surface of the object penetrated. The game also makes use of a physics engine, which was not implemented in previous Call of Duty titles for the PC. Death Animations are a combination of pre-set animations and ragdoll physics. Some mistook the game's graphics to be DirectX 10 based, but it is stated that the graphics use DirectX 9.[12]

The official system requirements have not been released.
