Add Permissions To Windows Xp Home Shares

Recommended Posts

Well, one great feature of XP Pro is that you can add user and object permissions to network shares by unchecking, "use simple file sharing." This is not a feature of XP Home, however, there still is a way built into XP Home. It's called shrpubw.exe. You can use this handy utility to do more when sharing a folder. I'll step you through it.

First, go to start/run. Then type in "shrpubw" without the "".

A wizard will pop up that will take you through the steps of creating the network share. Click next.

On this page, you choose the folder that you would like to share by using the browse button to locate it. Then, you choose a share name and desciption. Click next.

Alright, this is the fun part, the part that you get to set the permissions. You already have a few choices available to you. If one of these fits your needs, select it and move on.

If you want more control, you can choose custom permissions.

You can select computers, users, etc and give them specific permissions if desired. Once all of this stuff is set, click ok and then next.

You will see a page giving some detail and you can just click finish. Congradulations, your done. There are also some more ways you can do something like this through hacks and programs and all kinds of stuff but this is the simplest for an out-of-the-box solution.

Hope this helps.
