Enzymes

Recommended Posts

Enzymes are a particular kind of protein that have the ability to catalyse reactions in living organisms. Proteins are very long chain molecules made up of amino acid building blocks. The protein chain is folded in a complex three dimensional shape known as its tertiary structure. The chain is held in this shape by interactions between different parts of the chain.

Enzymes are classified according to the substances they act on. A specific enzyme will work on only one type of molecule. For example, an enzyme that breaks down proteins is called a "protease," and it will have no effect on fats, grease, starches, etc. Similarly, a lipase enzyme will break down animal fats and grease but will have no effect on proteins, paper, starch, etc. Many microbial drain and septic products available in the marketplace today feature only protease and amylase enzyme typesfor enzymes involved in the FA metabolism.
