The Best Version Of Windows

Recommended Posts

I too remember playing with paintbrush, back in those days it was like a wonder  . Aaah, those old days :D .
I've forgotten to mention Vista, I've tried and older beta version (beta 1), but I didn't like it at all, M$ made this version too much for the 'new' users. I don't need all those explications, tips, hints & txts (same goes for SP2), I know what I have to do and I know what I'm doing (that's what I now like about Win3.1x & 9x, no annoying and useless hints & tips).

@austiniskoge: "Linux is twenty million times more reliable and stable than Windows", this just depends on how you configure windows & linux. With the right apps, windows is almost absolutely stable (I don't have virusses & other crap and the only crashes occur due to hardware (overclocking) errors). The same conclusion can be made for linux, if you malconfigure it, it won't work, it just depends on what you do with it.
"it comes in every flavor of the rainbow!" maybe this is the problem with linux, what version is best for me ? There are too many choises.

Funny, because for me, it's just so easy to make choice with which Linux distro to use. For me, that'll be SuSE Linux and I have used it since a month after I tried my first Linux installation. It's the 3/10 distros I've tried.

You're correct about choosing the correct app, but these app takes more time and effort to combine in order to make Windows stable. However, on Linux most of the security is installed automatically or part of the basic security.

Well, I like the Windows XP GUI, but beyond that, there's not really anything in it that I really prefer. Windows 2000 isn't bad; I'm using it right now and like it. I used Windows 98 a lot before, and now I'm really starting to suspect if it's true that 98 has better security. After all, during the period of time I was on 98, there were never any security problems. On 2000, I got a couple of viruses that I eventually got rid of through PC-cilln. kAs for my favorite...I guess I'll have to say Windows 3.1. Not because its practical or anything, but just because it's amusing to see an older version of Windows. And I guess it plays a role in nostalgia too.On the practical side, I guess I prefer 2000. Its GUI is really annoying, but it hasn't crashed ever since I started using it. :D

I was a huge Windows 98SE fan, but then, some stuff just come up, and I could not use them anymore, they lost support, not just from Microsoft, than from other software manufacturers... After that period I've used Win2k and when XP came up, I was hardly transfered to them, and one period of time I was always coming back to win2k... Later when I've realized that basicly win2k and winxp are pretty the same, only that xp looks a bit better, I've stayed with xp. So you are guessing what Im using now

Although I own the beta versions of Vista, I'm not really going to comment on it. I noticed several 'lethal' bugs (such as crashing when trying to read several DVDs) and it isn't gold yet.I only started using Windows ever since 98; however I loved XP the most. Compared to 98, plug n play finally worked (rather than plug and pray).Featured great stuff added in ME which didn't really get noted because the version was abysmal. Bad cohesion, riddled with bugs. Talking about features like Restore Windows, which I have used a lot.Much easier and better to better clean up and organise computer. I had fewer troubles with XP than the other versions, and these were fixed in a rapid rate. I'd never go back from XP to, let's say 98. Many (as well as I did when trying out beta) might prefer xp over vista because of the solid product. MS didn't have it easy to compete with their own product. It would also be, IMO and at least for me, go back to older versions as they hardly support many new technologies crafted over the years. Especially internet wise.

Hey, I thought WinME was the best when I bought it with my computer in 2001, but we upgraded to XP after a nasty virus. I think Windows XP is the best because I think it has more capibilities. It is more secure in my opinion. It has better graphics and a good logon system. I think WinXP is better than Win2k because it has better graphics. I've never tested Windows Vista. But Win2k has all the features I want. I choose WinXP as best. ~souradipm

I had 2000ME on my ld laptop and never really liked it.I had 95 which was rubbish, and have now got two XP'S.XP's can get a bit confusing, but I have tried friends computers, and I think 98 is quite nice, so tied between XP and 98.

I had Windows 98SE for the longest time and loved it.
The only reason I got XP is because all these programs and games were coming out and saying "Compatible with Windows 2000/XP only.
The reason hardcore windows fans love 98SE is because it had less bugs, better security and stuff. Yes its a horror, 98SE has better security then XP

I completely agree, I just stopped using Window 98SE because of all upcoming programs and games being release just for 2000/XP... also when I bought a new computer some years ago, it came with a XP installation, and I gave it a try.

It was damn quick, awesome for hacking into your own system, for customizing system files... Those were pretty good times (also playing Starcraft =p). Power users felt very comfortable with it for the control they had on their system at those times, allied to the mainstream of programs and games being compatible with the system (unlike any *NIX systems at the time). Later on much of these 98SE users switched to XP, and the other 25%, let's say, went to check some Linux distributions out there, since it's more and more supported nowadays.

But we can't forget the disaster 98 (FE) was... Maybe that's why SE came out pretty good. Microsoft sometimes needs good shakeups (like the ones suffered before XP Service Packs, blaster-like) to make some good programs (and later on these good programs pass no the next developement area, where they put all limitations and MS crap, making the sucky programs we know nowadays hehe...). I believe a well administrated OS is still the best, despite of it's name.

How is 98SE more secure than XP? 98 was only slightly more secure than 95, and both of them have absolutely laughable security. really, even someone with almost no understanding of computers could bypass every one of 98's secure features. Not that XP is all that safe, but if you're speaking comparatively, it's a world of difference. The reason we still hang on to 98SE is for its performance in gaming, mostly. since it's much less of a memory and system resource hog than XP is. Even though there are easy ways to bypass XP's security, they definitely take more effort than 98SE.

With all the different flavors of Windows, what in your opinion is the best version? Win95, Win98, Win98SE, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, Vista, and even remember Windows 3.1?

I don't remeber Windows 3.1 because I haven't seen it in my life time, only in some screenshots on some web pages.

I hear that hardcore Windows users are in love with Win98SE for some reason? Is there any justification behind this? I mean this is a version of Windows that is definitely not supported anymore, but is the security and stability of this version that much better where it doesn't need support?

May be that is because each person like some aspect of the software,if some one dosen't need the visual interface of windows XP he will see it as an unwanted feature, may be geeks love things to do in the complex way,I hate Windows 98 very much because it was so unstable on my system, bad GUI it was really horrible working on it

I really don't like Vista at all. My one friend tried the beta version that is currently available, and he had it on his computer for all of 3 days before going back to WinXP. Vista is such a memory hog and everything seems "too" overdone.

Me too have that same opinion. But I don't think everything has been over done,In my opinion it is the graphics I hate in Windows Vista,Many says Microsoft is trying to be more like a Mac, whatever be it I hate Vista's GUI.I strongly feels that they must provide a theme that looks like Windows XP.

My favorite windows version is windows xp, no doubt in that.

The first time i got my first computer (that was 9 years old then :D ) I used Windows 98. I don't know which version, because i was a noob about computers and i didn't know anything about them. I really liked it. I had several ms-dos games.I had to work with the youngest Microsoft's OS - MS-DOS. Win98 was broken somehow, my parents didn't have time to get computer to the specialist fix that, so i needed to learn ms-dos commands :) I could say that it wasn't so hard. There aren't so much commands, so i learned what i needed in one day (few hours). What were benefits from ms-dos? Well, i was still able to play my dos-games :)And now i use Windows XP Professional. I have pretty fast computer with 2.2GHz Celeron, 1GB RAM and 60GB Hard disk. I got to say that i really like WinXP. It has a better GUI and more functions. Now i know much about computers, but don't know everything about winxp. Now I'm waiting for Windows Vista. I heard so much good words about it that i can't stand still waiting for WinVista (i guess it will be it's shorter name).

I have used all (Windows versions since 3.0) except Vista, and considered 95C, 98SE, and 2000 Pro to all be good, stable GUI's. WinME was ok after they finally fixed the bugs, almost 3 years later.I dislike XP, because Microsoft builds Spyware right into it, claiming it helps them to "take over" your computer, and troubleshoot any problems. Perhaps, they should build it right in the first place, and not have unnecessary problems. I don't want Bill gates and his cohorts looking over my shoulder.Windows isn't actually an OS, but a GUI. The operating system underneath is still some version of DOS, despite what Bill Gates tells you. I've been a DOS fan since ol' bill stole the code from it's creator, a college graduate student. I've played extensively with Windows code, and it's just DOS code I've been using since 1979, now wrapped in pretty boxes, and talking to the comuter in regular Machine Code. If you were to ask what's the best OS, I'd say some version of Linux, or PTS-DOS, which is an improved version of DOS, written in Russia.Even Apples OS's are better than Windows, but intended for graphics use only, and not capable of doing most business applicationsBest Browser??? FireFoxBest Mail Client? Either Thunderbird or Apache-Techie from Wisconsin

You should really have put a poll for this. It would be easier to keep track of everything. I prefer windows xp, its more user friendly and makes everything super easy. I feel like people who actually know what they're doing with computers prefer 98 or 2000 because it doesn't dumb things down for the user. I'm still using xp over vista until they sort most of the bugs out. From what I hear, it takes up way too much space and its kind of hard to use. It seems link all of the menus are filled with graphics and "neat effects" which can be really annoying when you're pressed for time. Also the warning messages, apparently you can get rid of them, just few people know how so most users suffer through warning messages after every mouse click. After a couple of years, I'm sure Vista will be favored over other versions of Windows.

Does anybody else feel like the motive for the vista was mac? It has the same glassy feel to it.

For me I'm on Windows XP but my own version today almost everyone can modify XP making all that slipstream and all that software in just one modified xp I also modified my security so probably I won't go to Vista but I guess in the future I could upgrade my XP but hey who needs an OS that requires to much hardware clasification where there is the best XP that has alot less hardware requirement and has pretty high speed. I think 98 is also good because most of the softwares I use pretty old and only work at win 98 so I'm on a DUal Boot OS ^_^

According to my surroundings it is Windows 95. May vote goes for 98 although to what I have understood the ``core'' of all versions after 95 are all the same. The decoration however has evolved to what we know today .
