PS3 Announcements PlayStation 3 Announcements

Recommended Posts

New PlayStation 3 price and launch details have been released. PlayStation 3 will come in two different configurations, the premium model with a 60 GB HDD and the basic model coming with a 20GB HDD. They also announced that a Hard Drive will come pre-installed, although it will be removable. The Hard Drive will be used for downloading content, and helping game performance through using a cache. PlayStation 3 will come in Black, White, and Silver. Since the new controller was Bluetooth, it will be considerably lighter than the PS2 controller. New and final controller revealed. It looks nearly identical to the Dual Shock 2, except it now has a feature that allows motion to be detected by moving controller physically instead of pressing buttons.Something new called "procedural awareness" was talked about. Players will be able to move their character 360 degrees in game instead of in a set plane. This will be utilized through the use of the new PlayStation 3 Wireless Controller which actually responds to the movements of the player. The Basic PS3 online service will be free and will contain multiple features, including audio and text messaging, video chat etc. Many things will be able to be downloaded onto the PS3 HDD, including music, games, and video. Micro transaction service will be available, through pre-paid PlayStation cards. This solves the problem of payment and also adds more security. Thats about as much that has been released not including the games. And speaking of games here are just a few of the games that were previewed and the CES award show. Gran Turismo HD was showcased. The Game ran at 1920x1080p resolution at a steady 60 FPS. Several cars and bikes are playable, along with 4 unique tracks. Eye of Judgment, a card game utilizing the new Eye Toy and PlayStation 3 was showcased. Basically, the player sets down a card under the camera, and the card is animated. The card can also be moved, and more than one card can be placed at once. Personally I do not like this game. New game called ‘SingStar’ for PlayStation 3 was showcased. It seems that you can download new songs and sing with them as you go in a karaoke style game. What a great game for parties! LOL Heavenly Sword was demonstrated. This was the game everyone was waiting for. A hot girl gettng sweaty while killing the bad guys. The main character swung her two swords around an arena obliterating multiple enemies who charge her. She even performed a sequence of moves which catapulted an enemy into the air - a very impressive demonstration. Resistance was showcased. Many aspects of the game were showcased, including explosions and various weapons as the character crawls through a ruined city fighting alien creatures. Afrikan was demoed. The presentation was sub-par. The video consists of multiple animals being showcased fully animated in 3D. Not much else was revealed. To demonstrate facial and body reality, Tiger Woods was shown expressing multiple expressions and saying all sorts of phrases, complete with realistic facial movement. It looks very real. I mean come on who doesnt love Tiger Woods! EA also plans to launch more than 10 titles on the PS3, including MOH Airborne and Madden NFL 07 (Madden will be playable) A new Metal Gear Solid 4 video was being shown. It was hard to describe in words, I believe this was something better watched. However, the whole video was basically Snake talking about how things have changed.

wow, where did you see this?sounds like some VIP demo at E3...except E3 was a while back. Those are some impressive features. I don't know if I would like the 360 degree character thing... I'm stuck on video games being simple, set planes.

Sony have announced that the PS3 will debut in Spring 2006 though this could be pushed to a Summer 2006 release. 9. How much will the PS3 cost? As of right now, there is no set price for the PS3. There has been talk (and when I say talk I mean it could be complete rumor) that there may possible be two different models of the PS3, a basic one which will be more available because of a lower price, and a more expensive PS3 with more advanced features. Right now, we don't know if this is true, but if it is, there will be two different prices. 10. How many controller ports will there be or will it be wireless? From what we know so far there will be 4 controller ports and it will NOT be wireless though this could be subject to change. There is also the chance of a multi pad adapter as there was on the PS2 though this is not known for sure. 11. What is Blu - Ray? Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD). There are different types of blue ray disk: A single-layer disc can fit 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB. A dual-layer disc can fit 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB. To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs. They will be sold for approximately $26 meaning games could besold for about $35 - $45. 12. What is "The Cell"? Well, there has been many reports on the PS3, and many which have actual information on the system. The PS3's will run on a Cell Processor. This is a new chip designed by Sony especially for the PS3. The chip will run at 4 ghz and contains 8 subprocessors. Sony have also announced that they plan to spend 1.14 billion dollars to build the next generation of microchips. The specs are as followed: Contains 8 SPUs each containing a 128 entry 128-bit register file and 256KB Local Store Contains 64-bit Power ArchitectureTM with VMX that is a dual thread SMT design views system memory as a 10-way coherent threaded machine 2.5MB of on Chip memory (512KB L2 and 8 * 256KB) 234 million transistors Prototype die size of 221mm2 Fabricated with 90nanometer (nm) SOI process technology Cell is a modular architecture and floating point calculation capabilities can be adjusted by increasing or reducing the number of SPUs. Two more sites with the specs of "the cell" are: http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=25 http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ Some sites with information on "the cell" are: http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=83 http://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-3-chip-has-split-personality/1100-6118072/ http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20380 There has also been predictions that the Apple and Sony are forming an alliance with the Cell chip http://community.us.playstation.com/?board.i d=pslounge&message.id=59838 It has been confirmed that the Japanese DRAM producer Elpida are set to supply Sony with chips for the Playstation 3 http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=84 13. Tell me about the PS3's GPU (graphics processing unit) Sony have teamed up with Nvidia to help them create a new graphics processing unit (GPU). The GPU will set the foundation for the PS3's graphics systems. There are no specs on the chip. It is still in developing stages, but there has been some speculation that the Nvidia GPU will be using the technologies found in the NV40 or NV50 versions of their graphics chips. According to Nvidia's chief Jen-Hsung Huang, the Playstation 3 will use Sony's API for the console. It is also suggested that the PS3 will use XDR DRAM memory, developed by Rambus. Nvidia have also stated that the new GPU will be ready at the end of 2005. http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=77 http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=72 http://www.ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=76

and more lmao

Below is a possible picture of the PS3 disk drive http://img9.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc38_blueray4.jpg 16. Will the PS3 hook up with the PSP in any way? After alot of speculation it has been confirmed that the PSP will hook up with the PS3. 2005Some interesting information has been leaked by the U.S. Patent Office regarding the PS3's future capabilities with Sony's own PSP handheld. Sony has recently filed a patent number 20040266529 [December 2004], which shows the PS3 and PSP will have wireless connectivity, and will be able to share content such as games, movies and music. Some information from the patent outlines some key details: "Broadly speaking, the present invention fills these needs by providing a system, a method, and a portable game device. The method of the system and portable game devices enables execution of a video game at a base computing device and wirelessly communicates processed data to a portable game device." "In operation 252, the selected game is executed on the server, and the data representing processed game instructions, are communicated to define video and audio signals on the portable entertainment device. User input signals are also exchanged between the server and the portable entertainment device to interactively use the game during a gaming session. In operation 254, the video and audio data that is representative of the video game play is presented on the portable entertainment device, and processed data is continually streamed to the portable entertainment device to provide seamless interactive game play." "In another embodiment, the local home user will be able to access their home server 102 to gain access to their games or media database that includes games that were previously purchased, or access a game that is currently being executed or to be executed on the game console 103. In each case, main processing of the video game program will occur at a location that is remote from the portable game device 108a. In this manner, the user of the portable game device 108a will have a rich content experience without having to purchase expensive hardware that may be bulky or consume an unnecessary amount of battery power." This information tells us that Sony had even bigger plans for the PSP from the start. It will be feature-rich, and deeply involved with the PS3. If you haven't found that one last excuse to buy the PSP, this is it. We'll keep you updated when more details emerge. You can click below for the entire patent. Call me getting older, but $600 for the system and as much as $75 per game being rumored....no thanks. If I actually buy a next generation console it looks like it's going to be the X-box 360...or I might not buy one at all and play my PS2 until it dies. I'm not buying a Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD player either simply because I think both formats are going to get replaced by download services. Plus...which ever one I did buy, would end up being the looser. I refuse to pay more than about USD 25 for a game anymore. I'll wait a year and let it become a "Platium hit" and when they have a buy 2 for $30 deal, I'll get a couple new games. It's just I have a lot of other things I could spend that money on...

Well the ps3 is pretty impressive but i am personally not a fan of consoles, i prefer the pc where you can pickup good games for $50 and it is easily upgradable. I might (that's a big might) get a 360 for christmas this year when the sales are on, only because i have played one before and had a muck around with one and it seemed pretty cool, paying $600 for a console that only plays games is a waste of money, i'd rather spend that $600 on buying one of the latest graphics cards for my pc.-HellFire

In my opinion, it's a multimedia machine with too many crap you don't need and supports better graphics. You won't find innovative gameplay here I'm afraid as developers are running away from the high dev costs. The small third party devs are afraid. People can't try out new risky stuff but will go for the dozenth sequel.Sony themselves announced they're counting on PS2 success for people to buy those expensive blu-ray stuff on regular TVs. They've been nothing but cocky so far, and I read an arrogant remark from Sony almost every day.As well that they're more leaning to a "mix between PC/Console" (they also claimed PS2 was a 'supercomputer' back then) which won't do them any good IMO. People want the simplicity of a console. If you want a PC, you'd better get a real one. And not a ploy of sony to buy the blu-ray in the market and screw the consumer.

With the next gen consoles around the corner, the big question will be “Should I update my computer or should I wait for the latest consoles?” In order to aid in this decision, I’ve compared the next gen consoles against computers in the following categories: Ease of Use, Controls, Games, Features, Price, and Their Future:Ease of useConsoles: Consoles are fairly easy to operate. Once you have it hooked up to your TV, all you do is pop in a game and play. PCs: PCs, on the other hand can be a pain to keep up and running. There are several threats you have to deal with, such as viruses and hardware incompatibilities. On top of that, you have to go through an installation process, after which, you usually have to install a patch.Winner: Consoles win the Ease of Use category without breaking a sweat. They are nearly maintenance free and allow you to jump into your games a lot faster.Consoles: 1 PCs: 0ControlsConsoles: Consoles usually have a rather limiting choice for controllers. There is the standard controller, which is enough for most functions. Some companies will release other forms of the controllers, such as the Steering Wheel or the DDR pad, but they are usually game specific. Some console games do allow you to change the button configuration of the controller, but this feature is fairly rare for most console games. Even if the game does offer the ability to switch the button configuration, it is usually restricted to a few preset styles. With the latest consoles, the Nintendo Revolution will actually offer a radically different form of controls. Their “remote” controller for the Revolution will be able to obtain its orientation, distance from the TV, as well as where it’s pointing. This type of set up can be useful for FPS. This may give the Consoles a leg up over the PC market; however, I’m sure it’ll be a matter of time before a company emulates the setup for the PC. PCs: PCs have a wide variety of options for controls. There is the basic keyboard and mouse combination, as well as many other peripherals (game pads, Steering Wheels, Joysticks, Motion Tracking devices, ect). Another advantage PCs have over Consoles is the ability to map the controls. In other words, if you don’t like how you control the game, you can usually just change the settings in the options menu to what ever pleases you.Winner: PCs dominate Consoles in the Control category. PCs have more forms of controllers, as well as have the ability to change the key configuration.Consoles: 1PCs: 1GamesConsoles: The Console game library keeps growing. There are plenty of games for anyone’s taste. Unfortunately, Consoles don’t have many Real Time Strategy games, and they have console specific games.PCs: PCs have a similar game library, as well as most of the good consoles games. Take the X-Box 360. 10 of the 18 launch titles were already released for the computer. They also have plenty of game for people who like strategy.Winner: Computers win the game category, but not by much. Most of the good console games do show up on the PC. As for the consoles, in order to get the full experience, you have to have all 3 next gen consoles.Consoles: 1PCs: 2FeaturesConsoles: In the past few years, consoles have become somewhat feature rich. They can play music CDs, DVDs, have some storage medium, have internet access, and have their own OS. Their hard ware is usually fixed, but you can buy certain attachments to improve your experience.PCs: PCs can do a lot of things. They can play games, keep track of your finances, control entire companies, watch movies, share huge amounts of data, make media, ect. Computer hard ware can be greatly expanded, in a number of ways, which can allow a computer to do an unbelievable amount of things.Winner: PCs win the feature category due to the massive amount of things they can do, as well as their upgradeability.Consoles: 1PCs: 3PriceConsoles: The latest batch of consoles will most likely cost around 400 USD. PCs: In order to match the power of current consoles, you will need a high end computer, which can cost you at least 2,000 USD. Even if you do have a rather powerful computer, you still might have to buy a new video card in order to reproduce next gen console graphics.Winner: Consoles win the price category since they’re cheaper.Consoles: 2PCs: 3The FutureConsoles: The PS3, X-Box 360, and Nintendo Revolution will be around for 2+ years. After that, new consoles will be released. During this time, their capabilities won’t increase, but they still meet the markets needs every few years.PCs: PCs are always changing. After 1 year, PCs will be more powerful than consoles, as well as have a much higher graphical ability. If the PhysX expansion cards do catch on, it’ll greatly increase the gap between the two; however, the next version of the consoles will most likely support them as well.Winner: I’ll have to call this one a tie. Yes, computers are constantly changing, but the consoles do tend to release before the gap between PCs and Consoles becomes too big. Consoles: 2PCs: 3Overall WinnerOverall, PCs are a better choice. Not only do that match the next gen consoles capabilities, but they can also do a lot more stuff (taxes, keep you schedule, e-mail, home security, ect), however, they are not perfect. In exchange for this flexibility, you have to deal with maintenance, installation screens, hardware incompatibilities, viruses, and a much higher price. In other words, if you have the money to spare, don’t care about maintenance, then a computer will serve you well. If not, then a console will be a much simpler and cheaper way to go
