Rumours Of A Google Music (iTunes Store Competitor)

Recommended Posts

Rumours have been flying around for quite a while about a Google Music service which is to be announced in about 6 months time. I tracked a bunch of articles on this and recent news indicates a very high probability of this happening for real. Here are some exerpts from those articles... Read the sources to find out more.

Elinor Mills has a brief post reporting that Bear Stearns analyst Robert Peck is predicting that Google will offer a digital music download service in the three to six months. Bear Sterns is using the name the name "Google Tunes" as their "code name" for the service. A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the story.
I've speculated on a couple of occasions that a music download service would be service that Google would eventually offer.

Our May 5, 2005 post titled: Let's Speculate: GoogleMusic.com pointed out that Google has owned this domain since February 2003, after acquiring it from someone in Curacao. Of course a domain name doesn't guarantee or really mean anything only that it's something to think about.

Also, on Jun. 20, 2005, we blogged a Google Blogscoped item that had a few comments from Dave Winer about a Google iTunes clone.

That was then.

Rumors have been circulating about a Google Music offering for quite a while now, and just today I received more fuel for that fire by someone who wishes to be called "Muze".
Muze says that Google is working on a product named "Google Music" to rival "Yahoo Music". Audio files are said to be downloadable (for a price) and there will also be videos, previews, etc.

On a related note, David Utter from WebProNews filled me in the other day that https://support.google.com/websearch/ simply gives us an error now instead of the once search box. Something is definitely happening with music â I will be watching closely for any changes in this space.]

Followup on the previous article:

I received another email today from the person who wrote last week. He has some more information about Google Music â none of which I can confirm, but for what it's worth I wanted to pass it along to my readers.
1) "Google Music" is not going to be the final name. There are a few names on the table, including "GMusic" and "Google Tunes". I can't say either is a huge improvement.

2) Google Desktop will have an interface for the music thing, with a search and media player built-in.

3) <name censored> was sketchy on this part, but he was fairly sure that Google will reformat Google Video Player for all media. It should be able to play video and music, and maybe integrate Google Pictures with a picture viewer similar to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Could be big, could be small... I don't know what I expect from it. I mean the more services they make the more they can integrate everything into one massive uber service which is kind of cool, but then again will they be able to compete with itunes? I mean, its already established and has no noticeable flaws to exploit. Plus itunes has the loyal iPodians to back it, so who knows. I think if anyone has a shot other then apple at succeeding, its google. I also think it WILL be successful, but I'm just not sure HOW successful it'll end up being.

Might sound funny, but there is one thing Google lacks: Steve Jobs.iTunes would not have been possible without Jobs' substantial links to the entertainment companies thanks to his ownership of Pixar and now a seat on the Disney Board of Directors. Remember, it was a techie (jobs) who was able to get the record companies to make a fair deal on electronic music sales online. It was a failure by the RIAA because they couldn't figure out how to make such a system work. Even now the record companies are trying their own thing of getting used to the idea of "renting music" instead of "owning" it. I think that is a model that Entertainment in general is trying to get people to buy into now. Think about it: 30 years ago there was cable and very few people had it. Today, just about everyone pays some kind of fee for their television service whether it be through a Dish or Cable. Google may have a following and branding power, but I am unsure how that will give them the same leverage as a Steve Jobs. A lot of Apple is driven by his personality like it or not. Personally I wonder when Google is going to become a bad word. Twenty years ago Microsoft and their products Office were great innovation that challanged the dominence of IBM in the business world. Today MS is the devil, and I have a feeling in 2015 Google will become the bad guys in public opinion.

That would be so great! Well, iTunes does't work in Israel, but if GTunes (someone copyright that, quickly!) were to work here in my own little country I would be very pleased! I'll probably even buy myself an MP3 player for the occasion. :D

Google are great, and the idea of buying music over the internet (though "renting" music is out of the question) is tremendeous, and will eliminate my two problems with buying CDs:

The huge price for a physical CD media that's going to be digitized anyways (even though I love having the original CD with all the booklets and artworks - if anyone wants an example, check out the booklet in Green Day's Kerplunk for a cool story)...

and the inaccessability of it, owing to infrequent and small music stores, and the lack of a huge diversity of CDs here.

Besides, Google just rocks my socks every day!

Google's seems to have their hands into a lot. I could see this happening. As mentioned cd prices are something that people complain about, and less convenient then just downloading a song. I look for most companies to have some form of music store. Wally world even has their own little spinoff of itunes. Could be interesting.

My biggest complaint about iTunes is that some of the most popular tracks are only available if you purchase the full album. Why is this so? Who made this decision - the record label or Apple? I don't know, but I DO know this: if Google's venture doesn't include that annoyance, then they'll have a one-up on iTunes right out of the gates as far as I'm concerned. That and Google would probably offer free download codes...and the price per download might even be a little cheaper than Apple's .99 per track.

Well all I can say is it sure as hell wouldnt suprise me. Every product google seems to release is always far better than all it's competitors.Soon enough google could well have a monopoly over all products.Who knows maybe well see google fast food chains and airports? haha

Hmm... tantalizing.I would definitely see what "Gmusic" had to offer if there ever was one.But I do think if Google sticks its fingers in enough people's pies, they'll lose street cred/popularity. Or, they'll run out of fingers XD.

If it's true, I don't think it's going to be successful. Look at the similar products that Google has released: Froogle and Google Video. I haven't heard anyone say "Look! I got this from Froogle!", and it seems to have disappeared from the Internet shortly after its release. Google's video directory is, in my opinion, the most messy of all Google products. It is nowhere near YouTube's directory. However, I thought that Google's embedded Flash video player was better than YouTube's player. And since Google had some success in Google Talk and Desktop, I think that it's music player (if it's going to release one) will be quite successful. I doubt it'll be better than Winamp, though. :(

I'd say that outlook for any company getting into e-music business is quite grim now. Unless they come up with something groundbreaking or provide considerably better service. But Google has one important asset: they possess huge advertising capacity. Advertising on google.com doesn't cost them a thing and I'd guess that's a pretty good place to advertise an electronic music store. And then you can drop the search ratings of the competitors a bit...I say google has a chance in this but they have to provide a really good service. And it can't be done to the style of their other products, that's just not going to work. Anyways they're a large company with raising profit, experimenting such a store won't be a big risk and it might end up being a potential competitor for iTunes.

Some have already started saying they're acting kind of evil, most recently censoring search results for users in China. But I digress.

I've read (that is this isn't my own thinking) that much of what Google releases is done in order to keep it's competitors off balance. It may not be a well planned attempt to get into music downloads, as much as a way to keep Yahoo and Microsoft and iTunes and whoever else guessing what Google is doing. If your competitors are spreading their resources too thin trying to compete on all fronts, they won't be focused on challenging the primary money maker, search specific advertising.

Speaking of the Redmond Giant - LINK

How about that? Now MS will be tying up with iRiver to produce and market so called "iPod Killers". They're also planning to launh their own music purhase store which undoubtedly will be tied in with Windows Media Player in the future.

MS has already tied up with MTV and will launch URGE some time later this year.

Apple and Microsoft are one of Googles main competitors, so in all means it's a good idea. But what I think will happen, if of course this is true, is that all of the iTumes users are going to bash a bunch of googles users.I'm sure at one point Google will become one of the best cheap music stores, but that beginning is going to be quite hard.As far a Google being the bad guyes, it's going to take a lot of people to make Google a bad place. They have millions and millions of countless searches every hour, I mean come on.(What google should do is sell out all their stocks and then release it. xD That would get them a whole bunch of money.)But opinions aside I like this idea and if they do release it, it will work out fine.
