infamousflame 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2005 I have today set up an image host using my Xisto account. There will be a limit on how much space I allow each user to take up, this will be decided once I see how much interest there is for the host.
Neverseen 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2005 It's cool, but to be honest, I prefere using Image Shack And I don't even need to sign up at Image Shack to be able to host my images...
infamousflame 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2005 Well, is Image Shack not like a proper, fully serviced thing rather than something put up because the webmaster had spare diskspace? Anyways, do you think I should turn signups off then? It's just that doing that might cause spam or porn or whatever.
Neverseen 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2005 Heh. I think that the only one way to avoid spam and pr0n is to control all the stuff people are submitting. Well, that's what I think.... first do not turn this 'sign up" thingy off.. then you see if there's a lot of users who're signing up. If you have a descent number of registered members, so you don't need to turn it off Now if you see that nobody really want to sign in, then you try to turn it off and see what happens After all, it's always under your control. infamousflame 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Nice advice, thanks a lot, I'll go turn it on just now. (I realised two minutes ago that it's off by default . Also, I think I need to tweak some permissions...
musichere 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Imageshack is perfect for me, you can store your images and have a personal account which is just an adress which you can access from anywhere in the world without a password. The problem is with their new features, which they are charging quite a lot of money for which is just not worth is. I think they ought to make the free, since it's their dedicated userbase that brought them to the top.

infamousflame 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Lol, okay, can someone give me a definitive list of safe image extensions that can't be loaded with some destructive code or something, and a reasonable size limit, bearing mind I'd be giving about 75MB to the whole service if neccessary?
musichere 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2005 Well 75MB is just 75 pictures of which are 1024KBTherefore your best bet is to only allow images to be hosted whihc are very very small, for example 50KB or something for avatars and signiatuers. That way you would be able to host a decent number of images. You probably shouldn't allow uncompressed images becuase they are a pain on servers

When you say uncompressed images, are you talking about BMPs? If not, what formats are uncompressed?
Neverseen 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2005 Thanks for the info. When you say uncompressed images, are you talking about BMPs? If not, what formats are uncompressed? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> even JPEG can be uncompressed.. as it comes right away from your digital camera. In fact I think the important thing is not compressed/uncompressed, but the SIZE of the file. Because bigger the files are, quicker your server is full And also I think you have a limited traffic here at Xisto. So it'd be better for you to have small files thank large ones
infamousflame 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2005 Thanks Neverseen. I am having trouble with the uploader though. I think it's a perms issue. Would anyone mind having a look for me? http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/. It's when you try to upload something that the problem occurs. I dunno if this helps, but when I tried to chmod something that the readme for the uploader script told me to chmod, I couldn't. Some error popped up in my FTP client. Thanks in advance for any help! musichere 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2005 Lets test it:The following files were NOT uploaded:100_0545.JPG, file size(904.772KB) is greater than 500KB. OK that works. The following files were NOT uploaded:Could not move "100_0545.jpg" to the incoming directory. Ok something's wrong. That file was only 200kb.
