qwijibow 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 Well, what more needs to be said ? this is the single greatest thing that ever happened to linux... In the current suituation... Yeah Linux rocks, but people want games. With the playstation3's optional Hard Disk Drive being shipped with Linux pre-Installed, that argument just got blown out of the water. you have a Ps3 for all the gamers, and Linux for the seriouse stuff. Recently IBM, the developers of the Cell processor mailed kernel patches to the linux kernel mailing list. In other words, as of kernel 2.6.11 (the current latest linux kernel) Linux is capable of running on the Ps3. Im not a gamer, i couldnt care less about games.. but have you seen the system specs for the Ps3 ??? The average 3.2Ghz PC is rated at about 0.01 TerraFlops processing power. The Average 3.2Ghz Cell Porcessor is rated at just over 2 TerraFlops. Just for comparason, the Xbox 360 is about 1 TerraFlop. and they are planning on running the Ps3 at 4 Ghz !!!!!!! On floating point operatioms, that makes the Ps3, a good 200 times as powerfull as my AMD Athlon64 3400+ (2.4Ghz). Before we got too excited, 200 times more terraflops does not mean that the playstation3 could run Half-Life2 at 10,000 frames per second, there are far more other things to take into accound, like bandwidth etc etc etc. But this Super Computer (yes, its classed as a super computer) is going to be sold for approx £300. Half the price of my self built PC. When the Ps3 is released, my pc is getting sold, and i will be working on Gentoo Linux running on the Ps3. Cummon second quater of 2006 Links... Thats all i can say for now. Maybe we'll soon see hosting companies say we host on our own PS3 or something like that i mean 2+ Teraflops!!?? Thats bloody amazing. There is one question though,1. Can we install our own OS??I think that will be a factor that i would take into consideration before buying one. Also the availability of titles in India would be a deciding factor before i buy one. miCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 Holy cow !! That box will beat the living daylights out of any and every system I've assembled before. And imagine letting Linux run amok empowered with such resources... whoever said you can't travel faster than light hadn't obviously known ps3+linux combo's going to so totally prove him wrong
jpod999 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 Wasn't there a PS2 Linux thing you could buy? It wouldn't have run very good though because the PS2 is definately not as fast as the PS3's are going to be. I can't wait to see the PS3's in action with all of the settings set up to the highest settings.2 Teraflops is really amazing for a game console. Pretty soon you won't be able to buy computers as we know them, you will only be able to buy gaming systems. And who cares, they are faster anyways!
qwijibow 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 1. Can we install our own OS??what do you mean by your own operating system ?You mean the Linux distro of your choice ??? i dont see wh not.But i cant see MS porting their OS to a an arch of there competitors.Im sure netBSD will be ported too. netBSD runs on a gameboy Advance, so why not, lol.when can see see motherboard thats spport these cell cpu's ???In the old days, technology say major advances like the Jet engine, because of war... now its for 12 yar olds who should be getting better excersize.So... get all your friends to bring there playstations, Setup linux as a cluster computer slaves, and lets break some supercomputing records
SadElated 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 All the systems are going hard-disk and being internet accessible, it's wild how we've gone from Atari and Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo, to things like XBOX 360, Nintendo Revolution, and the upcoming (and very exciting) Playstation 3. Eventually the game stations are going to be so hi-tech you won't even need a seperate computer, you'll be able to do everything you could on a Windows or Mac, that you can on a PS or XBox. Heck, even the PSP and Nintendo DS have features like Word Pad, and messaging systems. It's insane how far it's all become and how the industry has changed from a simple gaming experience to a sudden impact on the internet world. Pretty soon you'll be able to play your favourite game while talking to your friends on the internet, your boss at work and explaining to him why you are sick today, and at the same time watch T.V or a movie! I've been anticipating PS3 since PS2 came out and I hope it's user-friendly as it's brothers. Hopefully you'll still be able to play PS1 and PS2 games on it. That was definitly my favourite aspect of the new PS2. I loved being able to still use my old PS games. Anyone have any other news on the developments? Trojan 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 Linux on the PS3? That sounds cool, but it does mean that games consoles are starting to become... well, computers really, like you said.I think this defeats the point of computers and game consoles, especially if it's gonna be sold at that low a price. madcrow 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 Sony will be selling Linux with the hard drive kit. With an HD digital monitor, a nice keyboard and a mouse you could easily use it as a workstation for 3d graphics use... And of course the game are nice too. I want this bad... Jeigh1405241495 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 Linux being on the PS3 doesn't make this gen of consoles any more like a PC then the xbox was...which if I am not mistaken just had a heavily modified version of windows as the OS on it
qwijibow 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 Linux being on the PS3 doesn't make this gen of consoles any more like a PC then the xbox waswhy not ?it has all the componnets of a computer, plus a fully functional operating system.Does that not make it a personal computer ? [i]_R_Crazy_Idiot 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 Hey, this reminds me of the linux on Xobx thing. Pretty cool. You could use it as a server, or a media center pc.1337
qwijibow 0 Report post Posted June 13, 2005 You could use it as a server, or a media center pc.that would be a nasty waste of 2 terraflops !
chiiyo 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2005 So does this REALLY mean that the PS3 can be used as a PC? I'm getting confused here. As in hook up a keyboard and mouse and hook this all up to a TV and run it like a PC or something? (Although if it was the PS3 probably we'd be using the controllers to move through the operating system. Keyboard maybe.)Wouldn't the lower resolution of TV affect such PC-like actions? I've always heard that the resolution of a TV is always much lower then on a normal computer monitor. Now if this is true then this really rocks. Great for convincing the parents. It's not ONLY a game console ( and not ONLY the latest most coolest game console) but for that price you're getting a terribly fast PC too! What other offer can beat that?*already plotting*

What other offer can beat that? *already plotting* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> think HD output, or if they're serious about linux on a ps3, a special plug to allow moniter output...so you can use an actual moniter. But if the ps3 has high-def output, my guess is you won't have to concern your self about low resolutions =D and if you're worried about eh price of HD tv/moniters consider that the ps3 won't be coming out for a good year at the least, and by then prices will have dropped well within reasonable purchasing ranges LOL This definitelly something I'm keeping my eye on, I'm not a big pc gamer and other then surfing the web and some random amateur video editing, I don't do much, so if this thing comes out and is decently priced in comparison to building a new computer when it comes time to upgrade, Linux ps3 will definitely be the best option.
