Have You Ever Been To Yagoohoogle? Google Yahoo together...

Recommended Posts

Hello!

while browsing the net, I found this interesting project. Its a searchengine that uses code from google search and yahoo search. You eneter a keyword and it gives you results in yahoo and google in one splited screen. It's pretty interesting if you constantly check your page rank and you must compare results between 2 powerful search engines like yagoo! and google. Anyway there are many software solutions that you can buy, and they have more specific stuff than just comparing results, but hey, this one is free...
Ok, now enough talking HERE is the link to http://www.yagoohoogle.com/ :P

I don't think the creator of this project will be sued. He/she did not do anything illegal like stealing Yahoo or google's search code and algorithmns. I'm concerned though, about the images used on the home page. He/she created a logo using Yahoo and google's official logos. You can be sued for trademark infringement for that if you did not have approval or permission to use their logos.

this to me seems a little pointless. i think it is a novel idea to show the results in both search engines at the same time and i don't think it is hard to do the code as it does not require much programming at all if they have done it like i think they have. for me google is much better than any other search engine on the net and probably the most used. i do not really know why i think that it is pointless... i just do lol.

I personally find it redundant. Most people use Google, and in case they dont, there's Yahoo!, MSN Search, Altavista, and god knows what else LOL. I do think this is Copyright infringement, since the logos are copyrighted and just cut up and pasted together. At one point some Belgian guy came up with the idea to "write" a "google" clone and name it Hoohle, which is how people from the Flanders pronounce google (the pronounce a g as h). He got a pretty nasty email, telling him it was indeed copyright infringement. He was given 24 hrs to remove that site or he would be sued. THe site disappeared, however the legend lives on (mostly in high school geeks in Belgium LOL)I find the code pretty disappointing to be honest.... (the one of YaGooHoo!gle)

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/; <head> <title>YaGoohoo!gle</title> </head> <body style="text-align:center;"> <p><img src="yagoohoogle.png"/></p> <p> <form action="search.php" method="get"> <input type="text" name="q"/> <input type="submit" value="Search"/> </form> </p> </body></html>

So simple... I stared at the Google source, which is something I had never done (no idea why though) and it's simple too LOL. Ok, I didn't look at the "search.php" but I am hoping that both will be very much different, if not this guy (author of the site) can be in serious trouble....

Yeah... I fully agree with that... It looks like they made it in paint! :P And there is still the Ā® and TM in both logos and NO copyright statement!

Ā

After looking on Google's website, I found this bit of information located at: https://www.google.com/permissions/trademark/our-trademarks.html.

Ā

Rules for Proper Trademark Usage:

Ā

-Distinguish the trademark from the surrounding text in some way. Capitalize the first letter, CAPITALIZE or italicize the entire mark, place the mark in quotes, use a different type style or font for the mark than for the generic name.

-Use the trademark ONLY as an adjective, NEVER as a noun or verb, and NEVER in the plural or possessive form.

-Use a generic term following the mark, for example: GOOGLE search engine, Google search, GOOGLE web search.

-NEVER modify a mark, for example, through hyphenation, combination or abbreviation, such as: Googliscious, Googlyoogly, GaGooglemania

-Normally, an unregistered mark should be followed by the superscripted letters TM or SM to give notice that the company claims trademark rights in the term. A registered trademark should be followed by the symbol ƂĀ® to identify the term as a registered trademark. In advertising copy, notice of trademark rights may be provided in a footnote format Ć¢ e.g., by placing an asterisk adjacent to the mark and placing an appropriate notice at the bottom of the page on which the asterisk appears. Example: *GOOGLE is a trademark of Google Inc.

-Trademark rights vary from country to country. Some countries have severe criminal and civil penalties for improper use of the registration symbol. Therefore, do not use the registration symbol (ƂĀ®) in countries where the mark has not been registered.

And the MAJOR violation:

Use only Google-approved artwork when using Google's logos. Do not make any changes or modifications to the logos.

That image is a modification to the logo so it is an illegal image and Google can take action such as sue the guy. And I bet Yahoo has simalar trademark usage rules as well.

Ā

I also did a whois search and it appears it is hosted on a private server because the domain points to "no-ip.com" NS servers. And I think I know how he did this. I could probably code one but I don't want to get sued by Google, Yahoo, Altavista and any other one. But I could probably make a page to enter a search term and then go to another page to select which search engine to use but this is the wrong forum for that! :P

i can't seem to get on the site =P perhaps they shut down...maybe they're simply experiencing some technical difficulties with their server -_-

I agree on that violation of trademark - it's not ok to copy two (yahoo and google) logos and them combine them, without permission. Still it's funny idea, if I may say so. :P

The search pages are really screwed upLook at Google results, the sponsorod ads have are overlapping the search results!I think it is a good idea, but I am worried about copyright infringment. It really doesn't look like he/she got permission to use Google's and Yahoo's logos.
