chris1234 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2005 hello, I hope it is ok to post this here because the problem is actually with a new account i just opened with your computer host company (which is a great deal at $10 bucks), but the support and knowledge here is unsurpassed!S0 i have just created an email account in Cpanel , intending to use Outlook Express and or thunderbird to collect the mail, but the auto config doesnt work.I am not sure of all the smpt settings and stuff to use, actually i dont even know what smpt is, (just that it doesnt work). This might sound silly but I am not even sure of the mail address to use because i always get errors back (there seem to be 3 email accounts, one which i created, another which was automatically given, and another which is just mail@ my site. I'm not sure if you are using our own domain name, if you do I don't think the MX (Mail eXchange) record is setup automatically. you have to add it in the form "mail.mydomain.com" where mydomain is the domain you are using. If you are using a subdomain of the domain they have (like here on Xisto) then it will be in the form of"mail.ngc.astahost.com" (this is my MX record here)SMTP = simple mail transport protocol and it's just that.PM me if you don't feel like posting specifics and I'll help as far as I can.Nils Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I hope you're ready for all this.. the first time I configured out my e-mail client, I actually chugged 6 mugs of coffee (means.. keep the coffee flowing...).. but that was a long while back.. and by the time you've done this thrice.. you'll be making out a tutorial ... :-) Here we go... I'll go screen wise.. I use outlook & have used netscape.. but you'll find most of the basic stuff is much the same.. I'll explain using outlook... Information you'll require to know before you hit the mail client... 1. Your Domain Name: either yoursite.com or if you have a subdomain on Xisto, then yoursite.astahost.com 2. your eMail address - this is the one you'd have created on cPanel... if you require an insight into how to go about creating this.. pm me and I'll get down to making out a note on it.. 3. The password you set for the eMail address eMail Client - Step by step 1. Open your outlook 2. after it has loaded, click on the 'Tools' tab, scroll down and 'select' - Email Accounts' 3. You'll get the 'Email Accounts' dialog box, Under 'Email' select the radio box - 'Add a new Email Account'; Click NEXT 4. You'll get the 'Server type' dialog box, Select 'POP3' ; Click NEXT 5. You'll get the 'EMail Settings' dialog box: 5.1 Under User Information Fill in the following 5.1.1 'Your Name': Fill in your name or your company name here 5.1.2 'email Address' : Fill in the e-mail address you created here 5.2 Under Server Information 5.2.1 'POP3': Fill in (depending on wether you have a domain or sub domain) - 'mail.yoursite.com' or mail.yoursite.astahost.com' 5.2.2 'SMTP': Fill in the same as you filled in for POP3 5.3 Under Logon Information 5.3.1 'user name': Fill in the email address you created 5.3.2 'password' : Fill in the password you set for the created email address 5.3.3 'Remember password' - check this box if you are using your own computer - never with a public computer 5.3.4 'Log On using secure password Authentication' : Uncheck this (leave it blank) 6. Click on 'Account Settings' (its very likely the settings will not all come by correctly the first 2 or three times.. don't worry) 7. Click the 'More Settings' button - this will open the 'Internet Email settings dialog box 8. Under the 'General' tab - Type in the Name (as you want to identify the email account eg. My Personal account ) in the Mail account tab 9. click the 'Advanced Tab' and uncheck (leave blank) the box saying 'leave a copy of messages on the server' (this will download your mail to your computer. Click OK 10. Click NEXT on the Internet Email settings Dialog box 11. Click FINISH There you go your account is ready for action.. there are more settings you may want to configure into your Outlook, for example the frequency with which you'd like your client to check for new e-mails, wether you'd like to ask for a return reciept by default, you'd want to set a default signature etc.. the more you play around with your client.. the more you'll learn about it...
