canute24 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 I think i know it but i just want to be sure and get any extra info if someone has about it. What is hotlinking? I have read in places hotlinking enabled or hotlinking is not allowed.
Furor 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 I'll give you an example. For example, you host some images on your server and you don't want other people (who have sites) just to display your images on their sites without having to upload them on their server. That means that you're hosting the images and they're using it on their website. This will lead to a waste of your bandwidth and that's when you click on the option of "Hotlinking" not allowed. I hope that makes things clear!
Dragonfly 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2005 hi Furor, your explanation is simple and clear. I was also wondering about the exact meaning of hotlinking. Now this means image hosting sites are actually wasting away much of their bandwidths everyday. Think about such sites like imageshack and others. Thanks for the information. snlildude87 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2005 Dragonfly, if you're a webmaster, you might find this useful. If you want people to download...say a video...without wasting all your bandwidth, all you have to do is append .nyud.net:8090 to the domain extension of your domain. So to display an image, do: <img src="http://yourdomain.com/.nyud.net:8090/im.jpg">
canute24 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 I knew that but just wanted to be sure. Thanks anyway. I don't understand how are they going to know if someone does hotlinking and I didn't understand the "8090" stuff.
snlildude87 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 The "8090" stuff is just a way to not waste bandwidth if you want people to download something from you. Just append it to your domain like my example above. Several websites have begin using that as a way to not waste their bandwidth, like thebroken mirrors. millertime 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 hotlinking is when somebody else links to file on your server and displays it on their page. this will in the long run end up wasting your bandwidth and none of theirs. the best thing to do is turn hotlinking protection on and make them save the picture or video to their server and waste their own bandwidth
