Business Greats Of India

Recommended Posts

The first business man who comes to my mind is Jamsetji Nasarwanji Tata (founder of Tata group). He started his business career at the time of British Rule in India. That is appreciable. After the death of Jamsetji Nasarwanji Tata, came another successor called J.R.D.Tata (Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata). He believed in one thing. If my people give me 1%, then I will give them 10%. He started his career during the British rule and took Tata group to new heights. He was succeeded by another great person Ratan Tata, who carried the companies’ legacy with pride and honor. Today Tata group has scaled levels and became a brand with an identity of its own. The Next person I would like to mention is Dhirubhai Ambani (Founder of Reliance groups). He struggled from scratch, and he reached to a level where he has been an inspiration to millions of people, who want to achieve something big in life. He was succeeded by his sons Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani. Two IT giants I would like to name, one is Azim Premji (Founder of Wipro) and N.R.Narayana Murthy (Founder of Infosys). N.R.Narayana Murthy in the start to his career went for a job at Wipro. Due to some reasons, he was not selected....now Infosys is the tough contender of Wipro, whereas IT is concerned. Two people contributed in a tremendous way in the banking sector. One is K.V.Kamath (ICICI bank). Now he is the chairman of Infosys. The second personality is Deepak Parekh (HDFC Bank). In telecom industry, we have Sunil Mittal (Founder of Bharti Enterprises). In the successful brands, we have Bombay Dyeing, Bajaj groups and Godrej groups, who have been great contributors in their respective fields. So the list is endless. One thing I would like to say that these entrepreneurs have contributed to the society in a big way with their vision, and they will keep on inspiring many generations ahead.

The tale of Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani is perhaps the most interesting of all. The two brothers, sons of Dhirubhai Ambani of the Reliance Group, were so close that you could start a conversation with one of the two Ambani brothers and continue the conversation till its end with the other. Such was the similarity of thought between the two Ambanis. The falling apart of the two brothers also saw the Reliance organization split between them with Mukesh Ambani getting the traditionally profitable cash cows in the energy sector, and Anil Ambani getting the more modern technological parts consisting of telecommunication and electronics. The division matches the managerial approach of each of the two brothers, with Anil Ambani being more of a risk taker and Mukesh Ambani who has a more risk averse approach taking the conservative and proven path.

Entrepreneurs are often successful because of their leadership. Leadership is of two kinds - task-oriented and relationship-oriented. The distinction between the two types is characterized by how people deal with their employees, contractors, and associates. Task-oriented leaders focus on the work and do what they can to ensure that the work is completed in a timely and efficient manner. Relationship-oriented leaders focus on the people and therefore create a better work-place for employees and contractors. Most organizations have a combination of the two leadership styles.
