Ps3 Super Computer?

Recommended Posts

The microchip that will live at the heart of the PlayStation 3 games console will be unveiled today in California. Developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba, the Cell processor has been called a supercomputer on a chip because of the way it manages its computing power.
Whereas most existing microchips contain several cores that all work on the same task, the new chip is divided into entirely separate cells that can work independently on different tasks.

What this means in practice is that computers linked together in a network can borrow unused processing power from each other, making the most efficient use of their computing capabilities. For example, if two PlayStation 3 consoles were connected via the internet, one could use part of the others Cell chip to complete processor-intensive tasks such as downloading video content.

The chips makers hope that it will be well placed to capitalise on the growth of home entertainment systems that depend on rapid downloading through a broadband internet connection, which makes great demands on processing power.

More details about the Cell chip, which is intended to rival the established market leaders Intel and AMD, will be revealed when it is launched at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco later today.

If your going to post something that is from another website or from the paper and such , you need to post it in quotes. People tend to get mad when people do that cause your uping your credits without even doing anything.
