What's Your Internet Plan?

Recommended Posts

Silly question? Well I just wanted to know how internet speeds vary around the world. so if you're interested, please tell me the details of your internet plan  My plan is pretty idiotic. While the whole world is switching to speeds in terms of gigabytes, here we are still being pushed in kilobytes :( my plan gives me 2mbps speed (which means a max download speed of 250kbps) with a download limit of 2.5 GB @ Rs.500 (~$10) per month. now what's the use of that! there are "unlimited" plans but the speeds suck even more for those!

Virgin recently released a 50gb fibre optic broadband over here in the UK...that's what I'm planning to get in my house at Uni next year. Apparently the download speed is actually close to the quote 50gb as well. Well excited to see how it actually fares though! It comes as a package with TV so its difficult to compare price but I think its between 30-50 a month.sorry thats in GBP as well

I have no idea what my plan is, since I'm at college and I'm just using what's provided in the dorms, but speedtest.net pegs download speed at 90 Mbps and upload at 55 Mbps. This translates to something like 2-5 Mbps effective downloading and 1-2 Mbps effective uploading.

Hi!

I fail to understand how you get a "2Mbps speed" when you mention that you get a max. download speed of 250kbps. I'm guessing you have a 256kbps plan with a 2.5GB transfer limit. You're probably looking at the LAN connectivity from your computer to the router, which doesn't really reflect the transfer rate between your router and the ISP.

I'm guessing BSNL/MTNL offers an unlimited package for roughly Rs.850. Which ISP do you use?

@dangerdan: 50gb sounds like an awesome plan! Maybe I'll get to see it in another 20 years over here :(@HDuffRules: Your plan is almost similar to mine then, but at least you don't have to worry about using up the bandwidth...@Nitin: I use BSNL 2mbps plan with a 2.5gb monthly limit. If I'm not wrong, whatever the plan says, you always get a lesser download speed than that isn't it? I have a friend who has a 6mbps plan and he gets speeds ranging from 1-2.5mbps. BSNL has an unlimited plan for Rs.750 and it has a speed package of 256kbps which means a max downlaod speed of 50-70kbps  In these days speed matters more than the bandwidth (at least for me) so I opted for the 500 plan and still use it grudgingly...Until the ISPs in India get their calculations right and at least increase the bandwidth for the present speeds, there will be a lot of complaining people like me! :excl:

Hi!@kasperooneyAh, now I get where you're going - the package you are getting from BSNL is a 2 megabits per second plan and the speed that you get is 250 kilobytes per second. Those are two different units for measurement. Bytes are always abbreviated to a capital 'B' while bits are abbreviated to a small 'b', which is what caused the confusion. Your speed of 250kBps is just perfect for a plan of 2Mbps so the ISP really is delivering on its claims - you shouldn't have anything to complain about!BTW, when you get the unlimited plan of 256kbps for Rs.750, your max. download speed would be 32kBps and not 50-70kBps.Regards,Nitin Reddy

Here in San Diego the fastest internet available is cable internet, no fiber optic internet yet. But trust me once they have it out ill be first to get it, right now my download speed in speakeasy.net is 12mps, and 2mps upload, 300kbs i think is max allowed or so and 1 gb is max dont know much but i think those are correct if anyone knows the fastest internet service San Diego Cox digital Cable provides please correct me. Cant wait for fiber optic internet. =]

ISPs and almost everyone else, tell you the transfer speeds in megabits/kilobits, bit is a smal "b", byte is a BIG "B", as someone already stated above. Don't mix them in your posts, people will get confused! As for my connection speed, it's around 1 Mbps (120 kB/s) for download, and the same for upload. It's what you here call "unlimited", but we don't have limits on the bandwidth here so... :( It's all I need, I have no use for light fiber :angel:Don't get fooled by the ISPs! :excl:

Yeah I heard India's internet plans are horrible, the most expensive plan for 2Mbps that is unlimited is like $2300 a year for one ISP. On top of that most of India's ISP's have a lot of down time as I know a few people I talk to get disconnected a lot.As for the plan I have right now its 8Mbps as for the price its unknown since my plan comes with cable and phone as well, all hail Comcast. Of course, their best plan is 30Mbps at like $65 a month :(.

yeah the ISPs here are really very greedy. I think the highest speed we have is 100mbps but its not unlimited and the price is simply shocking! I don't know when things will improve over here and when the ISPs will start to think about offering better services to the customers.

Well it was interesting to know the speed patterns all over the world. I can only dream of such connections at this point of time! Maybe someday there may be a miracle and speeds all over the world may be balanced so that better communication can take place between them. If at one end there are blazing speeds and at the other the speeds are at a snail's pace, there will be communication gap, isn't it?

So here's hoping for better internet plans for everyone around the world! :(

I have 2 plans. One is a 3MB and the other 10MB. Both are broadband. Reason why I have both, the former sucks big time. Internet signal always drops, be it wireless or cabled. Worse, their customer service always make us do things to check without actually solving the problem when we pass them the result of the test.
