Free Hosting From Trap17 + Free Domain Name From Co.cc

Recommended Posts

Hi -

This is the first time that I'm trying to register a (free) domain name (at co.cc) and get (free) web hosting (at trip.com) and I have some questions to make sure I'm doing everything right. I'm still a bit confused about how Xisto, xisto and (in my case) co.cc interact.

This is what I've done so far.

(1) I registered the new (sub-)domain "net247.co.cc" at co.cc, which offers (some, not all) (sub-)domain names for free. They sent me a message saying I have 48 hours to perform the setup for this domain.

There are three Setup options at co.cc: "Manage DNS" where it asks for two or more name servers; "Zone Records" where you can create "A", "MX", "CNAME" and "NS" type records, and "URL Forwarding".

For the moment, I didn't do any of these - I figured I'd first apply for the free hosting at Xisto, and once that was done, I'd come back and do the Setup at co.cc.

(2) I made a few posts in the forums here at Xisto (which I hope people found interesting), and eventually I had over 30 points.

(3) I filled out a Free Web Hosting Application. My request now appears here:

http://forums.xisto.com/topic/62345-free-web-hosting-application-updated-by-stefanscottalexx/

(4) Later a reply (I'm not sure if this is also an "approval") was added underneath my request, and it said I should go here:

https://support.xisto.com/

to sign up at xisto (using the same id I used at trip17) to request the Logical Plan, which normally costs USD 1.99 a month, and I should use MyCents as the form of payment, and I should wait about 5 hours for my credits at Xisto to be transferred to xisto. Actually about an hour later I got an email saying that 1.00 had been credited from my Xisto forum posts to my xisto billing, and I applied this to my invoice at xisto - but there's still an outstanding balance of 0.99 USD.

Now I'm a bit unsure what I should do next.

(a) Should I wait and see if Xisto posts any more credits to my xisto account? Or should I make some more posts in the Xisto forums to get some more credits which could then be transferred to xisto? I initially had over 33 points (after 18 posts), and Xisto credited a dollar to xisto - so maybe if I posted some more on the Xisto forums then there would be more credits to xisto?

(B) Should I also wait to see if my Free Web Hosting Application request in the Xisto forum gets approved by a moderator?

© The instructions for registering my new (sub-)domain at co.cc said that I would have to perform the setup within 48 hours. I'm not sure what, if anything, I should fill in for the second and third options ("Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding").

For the first option, I see here

https://support.xisto.com/
https://support.xisto.com/

that I should fill in "ns1.trap17.com" and "ns2.trap17.com" for the Name Servers under the "Manage CNS" setup option at co.cc.

There seems to be some overlap between the functionality of https://support.xisto.com/ and the fucntionality of Setup at co.cc - both allow me to designate the name servers for the new domain. I'm not sure if it matters where I designate the name servers - at Xisto or at co.cc.

(d) I'm not sure if I should be using https://support.xisto.com/ to create the new account (which involves getting approval?) or if I should be using https://support.xisto.com/ (which involves waiting until credits are transferred from Xisto to xisto).

(e) I'm not sure if I need to do anything with the second and third options on co.cc ("Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding".

Maybe I've done everything right so far - I understand that it takes time for the forum moderators at Xisto to approve applications, for credits to be transferred from Xisto to xisto, and for DNS changes to propagate through the internet.

I would appreciate any feedback or advice as to whether I'm doing things correctly so far - and what I should do next! Thanks.

OK, I just looked here:

http://forums.xisto.com/topic/61592-credit-system-v30-online-resolved-free-web-hosting-domains-dedicated-ip-digital-certificate-managed/

and it looks like the system of transferring MyCents from Xisto forums to xisto billing is new as of October 2008 - so maybe this means the procedures described here:

https://support.xisto.com/

are no apparently longer valid.

I'm still unsure about how to set up "Zone Records" and "URL Forwarding" (which are mentioned in the Setup at co.cc) - or maybe I don't need to do this at all. I did hear that Zone Records can be used so that a user can just type examplesite.com rather than http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ - is that the main thing they're used for? And should I be setting up my co.cc domain at co.cc or is it better to set it up at Xisto.com?

That's right MyCent is only a few weeks old and will soon displace the old system (second url you mention), all new users should go directly to get an account at xixto billing as you did. Right now existing users are allowed to use both systems, i.e. accumulating "hosting days" with the old system and earning MyCents to be used to buy hosting and optionally domains at xisto. Later on in my understanding all users will have to use xisto while still posting at Xisto.

As for setting up your co.cc domain I think all you have to do is inserting the nameservers provided by xisto once you get your hosting plan approved or you can probably put the nameservers in already if you can find them...

I have not setup a co.cc domain before so I am not aware of any arrangement specific to it.

1. Once you get your website through Xisto you want to point the name servers to NS1.computinghost.com and NS2.computinghost.com and then you want to either park or add-on the domains through your cpanel account from there.

2-4 Please read the topics and FAQS related to the new system, which you did, and you only get $1 every time you make 100 MyCents which will get transferred into your MyEarnings which will be used to pay for your hosting package.

A-- Every time you post your MyCents will be updated every 4-5 hours and so the longer the posts and the most you post, the more MyCents you will earn.

B-- No your application will be approve through the billing system from now on.

C-- Not sure never used that url forwarding domain.

D-E-- You want to register and create your hosting package through the billing website at Xisto - Support.com

Thanks you for the detailed reply, Saint_Michael.

I am still unclear on two points:

(1) What are the correct name servers I should be pointing my domain to?

(2) How do I complete the process now and sign up for cPanel access to my site?

(1) What are the correct name servers I should be pointing my domain to?

1. Once you get your website through Xisto you want to point the name servers to NS1.computinghost.com and NS2.computinghost.com and then you want to either park or add-on the domains through your cpanel account from there.

Is there a typo here? This conflicts with the "Important Nameserver Updates" referenced below:

http://forums.xisto.com/topic/55193-important-nameserver-update/

https://support.xisto.com/index.php?_m=ns&newsid=10

which state that the new nameservers are:

ns.computinghost.com (without the "1")

ns2.computinghost.com

Finally, both of the above sets of nameservers also conflict with a third set of nameservers referenced on the (possibly outdated and/or deprecated?) Xisto.com/manage page:

https://support.xisto.com/#

where it says: "If you have a Domain, Enter in the format "abc.com" or "abc.net". YOU MUST POINT YOUR DOMAIN NAMESERVERS to NS1.TRAP17.COM and NS2.TRAP17.COM ( your domain will not work until it is propagated )"

In summary, there's three different conflicting sets of name servers referenced in various places on Xisto and xisto:

(1)

NS1.computinghost.com

NS2.computinghost.com

per Saint_Michel's post here

(2)

ns.computinghost.com (without the "1")

ns2.computinghost.com

per the recent Important Nameserver Update

(3)

NS1.TRAP17.COM

NS2.TRAP17.COM

per Xisto.com/manage

(2) How do I complete the process now and sign up for cPanel access to my site?

(B) Should I also wait to see if my Free Web Hosting Application request in the Xisto forum gets approved by a moderator?

B-- No your application will be approve through the billing system from now on.

...

D-E-- You want to register and create your hosting package through the billing website at Xisto - Support.com

After my application was approved through the billing system, I ordered a Logic Plan hosting package through the billing website at Xisto - Support.com, and I applied the $2.00 I had in MyCents to the $1.99 Invoice.

My Product Details when I'm logged in at:

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

reads as follows:

Registration Date: 2008/11/14

Product/Service: Linux Regular Hosting - Logic Plan

Domain: net247.co.cc

DISK SPACE: 1000 MB

BANDWIDTH (Transfer Limit per Month): 10000MB

E-Mail Soln. (Yearly Only): Free Google Mail (10x 7GB Mail) (Domain Required*)

Web Builder/ CMS/ Gallery Pre-Setup.: none

MySQL Databases: 1

SHELL ACCESS: No

Addon Domains: 1

Parked Domains: 5

Dedicated IP: No

Subdomains: 5

Setup Custom Nameserver: No

FTP Accounts: 1

JSP - Java Server Pages - Support: No

Frontpage Extension: No

Payment Method: MyCENT

First Payment Amount: $1.99 USD

Recurring Amount: $1.99 USD

Next Due Date: 2008/12/14

Billing Cycle: Monthly

Status: Pending

Then I went to Xisto.com/manage to create 8-character-max cPanel login and a password for my site and got the following error message:

"You are suppposed to get approved for Hosting by ADMINISTRATORs."

And my Invoices when I'm logged in at:

http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/

read as follows:

Invoice # Invoice Date Due Date Total Status

10148 2008/11/14 2008/11/19 $0.00 USD Paid View Invoice

10089 2008/11/11 2008/11/16 $1.99 USD Cancelled View Invoice

(Note: Invoice 10089 had been Cancelled because I was previously thinking of switching to a different hosting provider, and then I recreated the exact same Order as Invoice 10148, which has now been Paid using the MyCents from the Cancelled Invoice).

I'm confused becase apparently my application has been approved through the billing system, and I've ordered the Logic Plan package at Xisto and paid for the invoice at Xisto using MyCents - and as Saint_Michael has stated here, my "application will be approved through the billing system from now on".

Earlier today I pointed my domain to the name servers:

ns.computinghost.com (without the "1")

ns2.computinghost.com

(I was going with the second of the three conflicting sets of nameservers above - assuming that Saint_Michael just made a typo here, and that the nameservers specified at Xisto.com/manage haven't been corrected yet.)

But now that I got the error message "You are suppposed to get approved for Hosting by ADMINISTRATORs" I've pointed my nameservers back to my previous free web hosting provider.

So my two questions now are:

(1) If applications are now approved through the billing system and I've successfully ordered a Logic Package and paid for the Invoice using MyCents at xisto, then why do I get an error message saying I still need approval? Should I be setting up my site name and cPanel login / password through Xisto.com/manage - or somewhere else (say at xisto.com or at Xisto - Web Hosting.com)?

(2) What is the correct set of nameservers I should be pointing my domain to?

I'm sure this will all seem very straightforward once somebody points me in the right direction.

I've been evaluating a lot of free web hosting providers and Xisto seems like it's one of the best because of the informed staff and active community and solid infrastructure, so I'm very eager to get started!

Thanks.

1.) You should be receiving an Email from XistoSupprt.com with your Login information, etc. once the Account is set up properly.

Earlier today I pointed my domain to the name servers:
ns.computinghost.com (without the "1")
ns2.computinghost.com

2.) That should do it. All the Domains I own are set to this and they work fine.

One question here guys ( Sorry for off-topic :) ) , if such free domains like .cc /.tk and rest of such free domains are good for google pagerank and crawler? I know content can pull out lot and domain/sub-domain rarely plays any role but in terms of traffic/pagerank how good are they?

Hey StefanScotAlexx,

Let me clear it all up for you mate,

Ok now Trap 17 has moved over to myCents you will have to keep posting until you have at least $2 in your account and then you can pay your 1st month of hosting, This is how it works now....

When you have your $2 in your account and you have registered with both Trap 7 & Xisto you then go to the Xisto products page

https://support.xisto.com/cart.php

Then you choose the logical plan, When your account is setup Xisto will email you all account details when you have done this you will need to go to your http://www.co.cc/ domain account and set the name servers to the ones dictated in the email.

Once this is done it will take upto 48hours for the name servers & DNS records to update...

After this wait you can then goto http://forums.xisto.com/no_longer_exists/ and login with the details in the Xisto Email and set everything up that you may want setup emails, mySql etc

From this point on all services are available to your domain and everything should work fine...

If you have any problems you can PM me mate
