Google Video (beta) Google launches TV search service

Recommended Posts

BBC just broke this news 3 hours ago (i think :P), and a very nice addition to the very useful google that already is. :P care to look for anything mentioned on tv, 'einstein' for example? click here. :D

Google launches TV search service

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4205267.stm

The net search giant Google has launched a search service that lets people look for TV programmes. The service, Google Video beta, searches closed caption information that comes with programmes.

yahoo has a similar service, which is also on beta testing as google. but results on yahoo yield less useful info, unlike that on google which can be more useful (i think :P). searching for 'einstein' on yahoo's video search would give this.

That is pretty cool though I doubt that every single tv program is on there.

No, far from every program. Right now they provide searching in programmes from ABC, PBS, Fox News and C-SPAN. And you won't get any real video content (that I could see), just screen caps and transcripts.

of course not, read the about first.

at first I thought this will be something similar to yahoo video search and altavista video search. but it is about TV programs and no actual video to watch. However this thing is very interesting and has the potential to be very useful.

If someday the bandwidth of internet is wide enough that internet TV is available then google could make a Tivo-like program based on its database. User can subscribe TV in a program-wise manner. For example, you arrange first through the Tivo-like program what channels and what programs you want to watch in a daily-base, then you only pay for the prgrams in the list at a daily-base. As of right now we pay whole 70 (or more) channels for 24X7, and 99% of our paid time we will and could not watch.
