The Internet Where Everyone Is Equal The only place you can be really equall

Recommended Posts

Years ago... I was surfing through web, chating with people. Anyway, someone was wrong and I had to correct him :P So we exchanged messages then I learned he's a middle aged man. That hit me. To that point, in my mind he too also a teenager. So I kinda fell remorse, I felt like i acted disrecpectull to an elder.

Just think about it, our minds cant talk to a monitor so we create an avatar for the people we talk on web. But because we know so little things about them, our mind copies our own identity.

So that's why we are absolutely equal on web. It doesnt matter if your partner is rich or poor, black or white, educated or a high school drop out, older or younger. Until the point he/she tells you, in your mind he/she is the same person as you are.

On web we are all anonymous, so we are all equal. We can all talk both without fear or without prejudices. You cant be racist to someone anonymous. Lets get back to my original example. In that year, I was young and shy... I couldnt argue with older people but on web it doesnt matter.

Did you catch my drift?

So you may show me web sites like Facebook or Hi5 where people put their real ID. But well... these web sites arent for discussions. The forums are still alive!

And you may also say anonymous are resulted in E-thugs. People who talks like "noob, f-ck u" or upload shity videos who bash many things. Well, that's the result of equallty. In real life that e-thug is acting normal because he's afraid of your muscles. He would talk like that in RL too if he had same power as you.

What do you think?

When I'm on the Internet, I treat everyone as they treat me. If someone is polite to me then I will treat them with the same respect, regardless of age. If someone is rude to me then I'm likely to be less polite back, or to just ignore them ;) Feeling that I've been disrespectful doesn't enter my mind; if I treat people as they treat me then they cannot complain.

On web we are all anonymous, so we are all equal.

A great power to us all, but one that some people are determined to remove.

And you may also say anonymous are resulted in E-thugs. People who talks like "noob, f-ck u" or upload shity videos who bash many things.

Those people get no respect from me. I'm all for freedom of expression, but at least do it vaguely intelligently; just swearing and insulting people is not a reasoned debate, but a cop-out when you haven't got a real argument.

I think I couldnt able to express myself. Hmm, let me use different words. I was a child. You know what they teach to kids. Respect your elders. So... can you engage into debate with your elders while you are kid. Well, some do. Anyway, that isnt the point. The point is the internet realeses all the fear and pre-occupution of the person.

Well, equallty isnt about intelligent or debates. What I meant there is, what would be real life look like if we can manage to bring real equallty. Because I say the internet has the real equallty and we see the results there.

I wanna make a little poll, survey.

Have you ever chated with a (if you are white insert black or vice versa) without knowing his/her race and when he/she show you his/her photo you surprised a little: ohhh he's not white (or insert black)

Well, not exactly. Not everyone remains equal in the internet. Quick reference are the mods and admins. They maintain a higher status then you do. But talking about everyone else. I guess is not really equality, its just that we do not care the age of the other person or our modality as we do when we speak in front of someone else.

Why should age matter? , my gran is coming up to 70 and she is the most Racist good for nothing waste of space ever.I hate her. not only that she is horrible to everyone who she doesn't have a vendetta against, and I know this is a multi cultural board so I wont mention any of the truly horrible things she says but in my lifetime she has managed to insult"Anyone Muslim, Anyone not "English" living in England, Idian people, South Africans, French, Spanish, turkish" and the list goes on.So should you treat her with respect, no , i don't think so when she has frankly wrong ideas about people she's never even spoken to!

Kobra, you are talking off topic. That was an example, Im not talking about neither elders nor respect.Gaspe, you're right about admins. I havent thought about them. But talking about everyone else, I dont think it's "I dont care" attidue but more "imagining a reflection of ourself". But that's my thought.

I think that to an extent, yes we are 'equal'. I don't know the background of the person who I'm talking to, they could be lying for all I knew. However, I think that human nature applies, and we're not truely equal, even on the internet. You will always have people you dislike on the internet (even if you don't know them, just judging them from what/how they type), and there's no way to avoid 'groups' on the internet. Even if they aren't, uh... Admins or such, there'll always be people who think that people who have been there longer/posted more, or their friends rank higher than someone you just meet online.I feel like, yes, you can get some semblance of racial equality on the internet, but once anonymity goes out the window, we're no longer equal. Uh... Did I make any sense, or was I just missing the point? :/

This "internet" you're talking about. No flaming, no trolling, no racism, no people making other people's lives harder.Everybody being equal on the internet can't be achieved easily. You need to change the hearts of everyone using it. Their minds. Their beliefs.Sure, a forum can be equal like this: if it's famous for some reason, so much that people want to join it so bad, moderators can ban whoever break the rules. I'm not talking about temporary. I'm talking about Permanent IP ban. This will make everyone learn the rules. This way the community will form up nicely.Disclaimer: If I just described a forum that exists, I didn't do it on purpose.

Of course, the anonymity gives us equallty. That's why Im not counting web sites such as Facebook. The old school internet where people chat with each other without knowing if the other side is a boy or girl, uglly or beatufil, rich or poor, black or white...

This "internet" you're talking about.

No flaming, no trolling, no racism, no people making other people's lives harder.

Equallty gives us power to flame to anyone. Because you are no more strong than me on web, becasue we are equally powerfull on the internet I dont afraid of you. So I can flame and of course you can flame me back. Because we are equal. (But of course, as gaspe mentioned. Untill an admin shows up :)*

*Im not favoring flaming or internet abuse. Im just saying it is the result of equallty.

Lets have an other example.

"i_speel_good" I dont know you. So while Im thinking sentences to you my sub-consciousness build my ideas on a base of you are middle-class white young male. Well, at least that's how I think our minds work. Is there (mind) doctor in the house?

:P

Bottom line, I love internet. It's a revolution for communication. Not only for making it easier...

By the way, Im replying the topic to extend my idea and share my passion(over used?)... not to argue against you or to disagree.

I would like to know what internet your talking about because with the help of the internet treating people like crap has made the problem worse, because you can't get in trouble for it. The worse that will happen is that you will get banned from the site in terms of hate, but of course hacking, child porn, soliciting sex with a minor will get you arrested. The internet is more of a dictatorship then a democracy as everyone has their own rules and don't have to listen to everyone else. Of course knowing how to cover your tracks people can can upload all the hate they want and never be found, and with all the illegal downloading going on people are getting into more trouble and going to jail for it. So the internet is not about being equal its about passing information and displaying data.

Wow i just realized that lol o.o when your on the internet you dont see someone has a lets say 40 year old man, your thinking of around your age kid ._. its so weird that our minds make us think everyone is equl to you and that you all are the same age until they tell you and show pictures. You always have that picture in your mind of what that person looks like too x.x. Its weird but interesting to realize wow lawl. ive done this a lot on online games. When i was talking with people i always thought that person would be a teenager and no older since well its a game u would think only teenagers play but in reality more than teens play on the computer lawl =].

MMOs tend to be a good example of age too, some may tend to act like "a%$hats" online only to find out that they are actually older people with different personality trying to juggle work and/or young families. Also, it can happen the other way around, a player may tend to act older, only to find out that they are only a kid through their picture or through other circumstances.
