How to enable or disable Highlight programs feature in Start Menu

 

 

As you know, windows Xp Highlights new installed soft wares , this feather able you to find new installed soft wares easily. To enable or disable this feature do following

1- Go to Start Menu > Click on Run and then type "regedit" and press ok to run Windows Registry Editor

2- Go to following address:

HKEY?current?USER\Saftware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced
3- Create a new DWORD and name it as Start ? Notify New Apps and give it value of 0 or 1

4- Close Windows Registry Editor and restart your computer.

 

Note: incorrectly editing registry entries may cause several damages, please create a back up from your registry entries.

Thanks for this. I often install programs for one-time use and sometimes I get too lazy to uninstall them. It really agitates me for some reason when I open up the start menu > programs (already cluttered as it is) and see ten or twelve randomly highlighted entries. Hopefully this will fix that.

Here is a even simpler solution (by my opinion of course):

Right click on Start button

Click on Properties in the right-click popup menu to open up the Properties window

Select Advanced Tab (you should find it below the title bar)

Deselect the "Highlight newly installed programs" checkbox

Press OK and off you go
